High School

The high school volleyball season arrives with tune-up events for a couple of local teams today.
• Houghton plays at a tournament at Sault Ste. Marie.
• Baraga plays at the West Iron County Tournament.

College Soccer

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team has added a new recruit. Madelyn Johnson averaged 12 points per game at Wilmot Union High School in Wisconsin.

MLB

The Tigers lost a 1-0 game to the Angels last night. Matt Manning turned in seven strong innings. His only mistake was a home run ball he threw to Jared Walsh in the second. Patrick Sandoval tossed the complete-game shutout for California.

The Tigers host the Angels again this afternoon. Tyler Alexander will start against Reid Detmers. Coverage begins at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez officially rejoined the Tigers yesterday, after missing more than two months to deal with family issues. He met with teammates before last night’s game to explain the challenge his family has been dealing with. That information has been kept private, but all accounts say the team welcomed his return. Rodriguez is expected to start tomorrow’s game. To make room on the roster, Wily Peralta was designated for assignment. Team officials say that will give him a chance to catch on with another team, while they look at some of their younger hurlers.

The Brewers fell to the Cubs 8-7 yesterday. Aaron Ashby gave up six runs over five innings, but it was Hoby Milner who took the loss when he allowed two runs in the sixth. Andrew McCutcheon, Rowdy Tellez and Hunter Renfroe homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers visit the Cubs again this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Marcus Stroman.

NFL

The Packers outscored the Saints 20-10 in their second preseason contest last night. Most of Green Bay’s regulars, including Aaron Rodgers, didn’t even dress for the game. Jordan Love completed 12 of 24 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown.

The Lions continue their exhibition campaign this afternoon, with a 1:00 game at Indianapolis.

Biking

The Calumet Electronics Great Deer Chase mountain bike races take place at the Swedetown Trails today. Youth events begin at 9:30, and the 30 and 15-mile races for all ages start at 11.
