High School
In high school hockey, Houghton, Hancock and Calumet are downstate at the Trenton Showcase.
– Hancock opened play Friday morning with a 4-3 shootout loss to Saginaw Heritage. The Bulldogs led 3-1 going into he third period. Alex Nordstrom scored twice, and Cory Tourtillott also found the net. The Hawks scored twice in the third period to force the shootout (there is no overtime period in games at the Showcase). Dawson Kero stopped 25 shots in the losing effort. Hancock takes on Plymouth this morning at 8:20. Our coverage will begin around 7:50 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Houghton came from behind to earn a 4-3 shootout win over U of D Jesuit Friday afternoon. Alan Jurmu put the Gremlins on the board first, but Houghton gave up three consecutive goals, and trailed 3-1 going into the third period. Jacob Cruse and Reid Pietila scored to tie the game, and Pietila found the net in the shootout to claim the win. Will Stier made 31 saves for Houghton. The Gremlins will take on Midland Dow this morning at 8:00.
– Josh Larson’s goal early in the third period gave Calumet the lead, but St. Mary’s Prep responded with two late goals to defeat the Copper Kings 5-4 on Friday. St. Mary’s took a 2-0 first period lead, but Rory Anderson scored twice within a minute early in the second period to tie the game. Robbie Erkkila’s goal a few minutes later put the Kings on top. The Eaglets quickly responded to tie the game. Ian Carroll stopped 17 of 22 shots for the Copper Kings. The Kings will face Grosse Pointe South this morning at 10:00. – Dollar Bay-Tamarack City shaded Baraga 60-57 in double overtime. Brendan Varline scored 24 for the Vikings.
– Jeffers fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 73-48.
– Chassell overpowered Republic-Michigamme 62-30.
– Ontonagon lost at Wakefield-Marenisco 69-61.
MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team opened its annual Winter Carnival series with a 3-0 win over Lake Superior State Friday night. Jamie Phillips stopped 31 shots to earn his ninth career shutout. After a scoreless first period, Max Vallis scored the Huskies’ first two goals in the second period, and Matt Roy added an insurance marker in the third. Those teams meet again today. Face-off is at 5:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams will host Grand Valley State this afternoon. The women’s game starts at noon, and the men’s game tips off at 2:00.
NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team edged Alaska-Anchorage 3-2 Friday night. Those teams play again tonight in Marquette.
Both Northern Michigan University hoops teams welcome Ferris State this afternoon.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team fell to 14th-ranked Marian University 4-1 Friday night. Avery Huibregtse scored the Lions’ only goal. Freshman goaltender Alec Rounds stopped 27 of 30 shots. Those teams play again today. Face-off is at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena.
The Finlandia women’s hockey team plays a single game at Marian University tomorrow.
The Finlandia men’s basketball team pulled out a 72-68 win at Martin Luther College Friday night. The game was close throughout, and the Lions held just a one-point lead with 33 second remaining. Brandon Robinson sank two free throws with 14 seconds left to extend the lead, and Terrance Fuller secured the win with a final foul shot with three seconds left. Jordan LaPlante led the Lions with 20 points. Marcus Geralds had 14 points and 14 rebounds.
The Finlandia women’s basketball team lost to Martin Luther 85-60. The Knights took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Lions 22-7. Julia Daavettila led Finlandia with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Both Finlandia teams play at Bethany Lutheran College this afternoon.

The result of the Calumet Wolverines’ game against the Eagle River Falcons at the Pond Hockey Tournament Friday night were not reported. The Wolverines will take on the Portage Lake Pioneers tonight at 8:00 at Dee Stadium.
