High School
In boys’ high school basketball last night…
– Houghton turned back a stubborn Hancock squad to win the annual Wing Ding game 61-47. Nate Gockenbach of the Gremlins led all scorers with 20 points. Jared Peryam scored 19 for the Bulldogs.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten with a 59-40 victory over L’Anse.
– Jeffers pounded Chassell 69-38.
– Dollar Bay shaded Ontonagon 54-53.
– The Calumet – West Iron County game was weathered out.
– The Baraga game at Republic-Michigamme was weathered out.

In high school hockey Friday…
MIHL Showcase LogoAt the Trenton MIHL Showcase, all three games played by our local teams at the wound up being decided in shootouts.
– Houghton defeated Northville 1-0. Jon Bostwick and Cale Markham scored the shootout goals. Marcus Gloss stopped 22 shots to earn the shutout win.
– Hancock took an early lead over University Liggett on first period goals by Casey Nicholas and Devyn Lacourt… then fell behind 3-2. LaCourt’s second goal of the game tied it late in the third period, and Matt Sanregret and Hunter Kero scored in the shootout to claim the 4-3 win. Dawson Kero made 19 saves for the Bulldogs.
– Calumet wasn’t so fortunate… falling 5-4 to Grandville. The Copper Kings took a 3-0 lead on goals by Jake Anderson, Ryan Nelson, and Rory Anderson. Grandville came back, but Rory Anderson’s second goal late in the third period forced the shootout… which went through five rounds before Grandville ended it.

– Locally last night, Jeffers defeated Ashland 4-2.

This morning at the Trenton Showcase…
– Hancock faces Hartland at 8:00. Our pregame coverage begins around 7:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Calumet takes on Grand Rapids Christian at 8:20.
– Houghton meets Trenton at 10:40.

– L’Anse entertains Ashland this afternoon at 1:00.

MTU Hockey Wins 7th Straight
The fifth-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team won its seventh-straight game Friday night, defeating Alaska-Anchorage 5-1. Shane Hanna scored twice for the Huskies, as they claimed their 23rd victory – their best win total since the 1981-82 season. Tech plays at Anchorage again tonight.

Both Huskies’ basketball teams host Saginaw Valley State today. The women’s game starts at 1:00, and the men’s contest at 3:00 at the SDC.

NMU Blanked by Bemidji
The Northern Michigan hockey team lost 1-0 to Bemidji State Friday night. The Wildcats host the Beavers again tonight.

Both Northern Michigan basketball teams entertain Hillsdale this afternoon.

Finlandia Falls to Lawrence
Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia University men’s hockey team lost to Lawrence University 2-1 Friday night. Chris Hoffman scored the Lions’ only goal late in the third period. The loss eliminated Finlandia from playoff contention. The Lions will end their season against Lawrence this afternoon. Face-off is at 3:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team hosts the College of Saint Scholastica tonight at 7:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

GLHL
In Great Lakes Hockey League action this weekend, the Calumet Wolverines host the DePere Deacons tonight at 7:30 at the Colosseum. The Portage Lake Pioneers will face the Deacons tomorrow at 12:30 at Dee Stadium.

NHL – Red Wings Prepare for Jets
The Detroit Red Wings host the Jets tonight. After missing a month with a groin injury, Jimmy Howard will start in goal for Detroit. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Off for All-Star Break
The Pistons are off for the all-star break. They’ll host the Bulls Friday night.
