Gremlins Take MacInnes Title – Sunday Sports Wrap

In high school hockey…
– Houghton edged Hancock 4-3 to claim the title at the MacInnes Holiday Classic on Saturday. Hunter Kero, Danny Hill and Matt Sanregret found the net for the Bulldogs. Houghton’s stats were not reported. Calumet took the consolation game, beating Sault Ste. Marie 3-1. Friday night, Houghton advanced to the championship game with a 6-1 victory over Calumet. Hancock pounded Sault Ste Marie 7-1. Seven different Bulldogs scored in the game.
– Jeffers lost at Escanaba 5-1 on Saturday. On Friday, the Jets fell to the Eskymos 9-3. Brendan Middleton scored twice for Jeffers in that game.

In girls’ high school basketball Saturday, Houghton lost to Gladstone 36-32.

The MTU hockey team opens play at the 50th annual Great Lakes Invitational this afternoon. The Huskies face the University of Michigan at 3:30. Michigan State and Ferris State will meet in the other opening-round game. The championship and consolation matches will be played tomorrow.

In Great Lakes Hockey League play Saturday night, Eric Bausano scored a hat trick, but the Calumet Wolverines fell to Eagle River 8-7. Alex VanWagner scored twice for the Wolverines, who held a one-goal lead until late in the contest. The Falcons scored twice in the final 4:20 to claim the victory.

NHL – Red Wings Edge Senators in OT
Gustav Nyquist scored with 48 seconds remaining in overtime, to lift the Red Wings to a 3-2 victory over the Senators Saturday night. Nyquist held the puck for 28 seconds, and skated two full laps around the Ottawa zone before slipping a shot past Craig Anderson to give Detroit its second win in a row. The Wings skate at Boston tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Play at Cleveland
The Pistons visit the Cavaliers this afternoon.

NFL – Lions Play at Green Bay
NFL Football LogoThe regular NFL season wraps up today. The Lions face the Packers at Lambeau Field. Kickoff is at 4:25 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY. The winner of that game will claim the NFC North title, and get a bye in the first round of the playoffs. The loser will open the playoffs as a wild card against the third-seeded NFC team.
