Gremlins Sweep Wing Ding – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

Houghton dominated Wing Ding yesterday, as the boys basketball team and the hockey team both earned easy victories over rival Hancock.

In the basketball contest, the Gremlins opened up an early lead, and held the scrappy Bulldogs at bay down the stretch for an 81-62 victory. Brad Simonson scored 34 points, and Pablo Salgado added 21. Carson Chenowyth led Hancock with 19 points.

The hockey tilt was evenly played through the first half, before Houghton pulled away to an 8-2 victory. Two goals by Gremlin Carson Stevens were matched by tallies from Hancock’s Todd Anderson and Petr Anderson. Tucker Tapani netted the eventual game-winner in the 13th minute of the second period. Jiseung Choi quickly added another score. Tapani completed a hat trick in the third period, and Nathan Erva and Sully Rajala also found the net.

In other boys basketball action last night…
Dollar Bay-Tamarack City kept rolling, with a 68-50 victory over Ontonagon. Ashton Janke scored 29, and Davin Hill added 20.
Calumet got past West Iron County 55-49.
– L’Anse downed Lake Linden-Hubbell 54-47. Paul Jacobsen led the Purple Hornets with 15 points. Caleb Gregoire scored 20 for the Lakes.
– Chassell cruised past Jeffers 72-53.
– Baraga fell to Republic-Michigamme 46-40.

In girls play last night, Elli Djerf scored 31 points, as Calumet edged West Iron County 64-63.

Today, the Lake Linden-Hubbell girls entertain Ishpeming. The JV contest will start at 1:00, and the varsity at 2:30.

In hockey today, Calumet entertains Notre Dame De La Baie at 1:00.

The U.P. high school swimming championships will be held at Marquette High School today.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

The Michigan Tech hockey team held off Ferris State University 3-2 last night. Tommy Parrottino scored the game-winner with four minutes remaining. Keegan Ford and Raymond Brice found the net earlier. Matt Jurusik made 31 saves. Those teams skate in Big Rapids again tonight.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team lost to Bemidji State University 5-0 last night. Those teams face off again this evening in Marquette.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams play at Lake Superior State this afternoon.

Both Northern Michigan University teams visit Ferris State today.

Finlandia University

The Finlandia University men’s hockey team shaded Marian University 3-2 last night. Tyler Watungwa and Blake Peavey gave the Lions a 2-1 lead going into the final minutes. Tyler Vanuden’s empty-netter proved to be the game-winner, as the Sabres responded with a late goal.

The Lions close their season against Marian this afternoon. Pregame coverage will begin at 3:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team hosts Concordia-Wisconsin this evening and tomorrow. Our pregame coverage of tomorrow’s contest will begin at 2:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

Both Finlandia basketball teams play at Holy Family College in Manitowoc today.

The Finlandia softball team will host its annual Dome Classic at the Superior Dome this weekend. The Lions will face Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Concordia-Wisconsin this evening, and Northland College and Wisconsin-Superior tomorrow.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines lost 4-2 to the West Bend Bombers last night. Miiko Karstu and Rory Anderson scored for the Wolverines. Ian Carroll made 46 saves – 20 in the first period. The Wolves host the De Pere Deacons tonight at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

The Portage Lake Pioneers host the Bombers tonight at 7:30, and the Deacons tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 at the Dee.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Boston Bruins this afternoon. Coverage begins at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons are off for the All-Star break, and return to action Thursday, when they host the Milwaukee Bucks. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

Our high school basketball coverage continues Monday, when the Calumet girls play at Houghton. The pregame show will begin around 7:00 on KBear 102.3 and KBear 102.com.
