High School – Gremlins Sweep Golf Titles
The Houghton girls golf team earned its fifth straight Division One U.P. title at the Pine Grove Country Club in Iron Mountain yesterday. The Gremlins finished 20 strokes ahead of second-place Marquette. Kaaren Liston shot a 90 to earn top individual honors by five strokes. Calumet finished fourth. Full results are here.
The Houghton boys defended their Division One U.P. title yesterday, finishing 15 strokes ahead of Marquette. Individually, Gunnar Stein placed first with a 76, and Brendan Longhini was second with a 79. Calumet placed seventh. Full results are here.
At the Escanaba Country Club, Ontonagon finished fourth at the Division Three U.P. girls tournament. Jeffers came in seventh – Cora Rajala of the Jets placed seventh individually – and Chassell finished 10th. Full results are here.
At Irish Oaks in Gladstone, Jeffers placed fifth in the Division Three U.P. boys tournament. Jacob Zerbst of the Jets shot a 74 to finish second individually. Lake Linden-Hubbell placed eighth, Chassell finished ninth, and Ontonagon 11th. Full results are here.
Hancock and L’Anse will compete at the Division Two tournament at the Wawanowin Country Club at Champion today.
In the high school softball tournament yesterday…
– In Division Three, Houghton’s season ended with a 10-0 loss to Gladstone. Hancock fell to Negaunee 12-0.
– In Division Four at Norway, Jeffers lost to Bark River-Harris 11-6. Lake Linden-Hubbell eliminated Stephenson 14-0. The Lakes will face Ishpeming in the semifinals on Monday at Norway. The championship game will also be played on Monday.
In the high school baseball tournament, Houghton faces Superior Central in the District semifinal tomorrow afternoon at Negaunee. The championship game will also be played tomorrow afternoon.
Track and field athletes will compete at the Upper Peninsula Championships tomorrow at Kingsford.
MLB – Angels Pound Tigers
Buck Farmer’s first start of the season for the Tigers didn’t go well, as Detroit lost to the Los Angeles Angels 12-2 last night. Farmer gave up a two-run homer to Albert Pujols in the first inning, a solo shot to former Tiger Matt Joyce in the second. He left the game as L-A scored three runs in the sixth. Chris Iannetta hit a grand slam off Tom Gorzelanny as the Angels added five more in the seventh.
The Tigers continue that series in Los Angeles tonight. Anibal Sanchez will start against Hector Santiago. Hear the first pitch at 10:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
Tigers’ first baseman Miguel Cabrera was hit by a pitch on his surgically-repaired right foot in the third inning of last night’s game. Cabrera fell to the ground in pain, but was able to stay in the game.
The Tigers have confirmed that Justin Verlander will make a rehab start for the Toledo Mud Hens Sunday night in Indianapolis.
The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and open a home series against the Diamondbacks tonight. Jimmy Nelson will start against Rubby De La Rosa.
Finlandia Adds Football Recruits
Finlandia University has added 35 more players to the roster of its first football team. That brings the number of student-athletes on the first team to 59, with some additional commitments still possible. 19 of the new recruits are from the Upper Peninsula.
Players from our area include Nic Walli and Austin Peterson from Lake Linden-Hubbell… Henry Williams from Ewen-Trout Creek… and Grant Holmstrom, who grew up in Hancock, but graduated from Lyman High School in Lyman, Wyoming.

Finlandia also added three baseball players for next season. Alexander Knapp is a second baseman and catcher from LeRoy Pine River High School. Jordan Edai is a pitcher from Detroit Loyola High School. Zach Wellman is an infielder and pitcher from De Soto, Wisconsin. Find out more about them here.
Stanton Run Tomorrow
The Stanton 5-mile Run/Walk will be held tomorrow. The walk will start at 8:30 at North Canal Park, and the run begins at 9:00. Both will end at the Kenner Dome at Oskar Bay. Park at the Kenner Dome, and shuttle buses will bring you to the starting point. The kids’ fun run will start at 10:15 at the Kenner Dome. For more details, click here. Online registration has closed, but race day registration will be available on site tomorrow morning.
There will also be a spaghetti dinner held at the E.B. Holman School tonight from 5:00 until 8:00. All are invited.
