Houghton swept the Copper Country Track and Field Invitational yesterday…
• In the girls meet, West Iron County finished second, followed by Calumet, Lake Linden-Hubbell and Chassell. Lily Williston of the Gremlins again win the discus throw and shot put.
• In the boys meet, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City placed second, followed by Calumet, Lake Linden-Hubbell, and Ewen-Trout Creek. Eric Weiss of the Gremlins won the 1600 and 3200-meter runs, and the Gremlins claimed the 4×100, 4×200 and 4×400 relays. Calumet’s Dryden Nelson took the 100-meter dash and the long jump.

The Finlandia University men’s basketball team has added a new player. Logan Depew averaged 15 points per game for Newberry this year, and was named the Eastern U.P. Conference Player of the Year.

In the NHL playoffs yesterday…
• The Bruins edged the Capitals 4-3 in overtime. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Hurricanes downed the Predators 5-2. Carolina takes a 1-0 series lead.
• The Avalanche outscored the Blues 4-1. Colorado leads that set 1-0.
Today…
• The Penguins host the Islanders. New York leads that series 1-0.
• The Panthers entertain the Lightning. Tampa Bay has a 1-0 lead in that set.
• The Golden Knights welcome the Wild. Minnesota is up 1-0 in that series.
Former Michigan Tech hockey star Tanner Kero has signed a new two-year contract with the Dallas Stars. It’s a two-way deal, that allows him to be assigned either to the Stars or their minor league affiliate.
NFL
The Green Bay Packers continue to stockpile quarterbacks. The latest is Kurt Benkert, who was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Atlanta Falcons in 2018, and has spent most of his career on their practice squad.
MLB
Casey Mize dominated the Mariners, as the Detroit Tigers claimed a 4-1 victory in Seattle last night. Mize pitched into the eighth, allowing just three hits – one a solo home run by Tom Murphy. Detroit backed him with three runs in the second inning, thanks to homers by Eric Haase and Jonathan Schoop. Haase added another solo home run in the ninth. Mize got the win, and Michael Fulmer earned the save.
That series continues in Seattle tonight. Spencer Turnbull will face Justin Dunn. Coverage begins at 9:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and open a series against the Royals in Kansas City tonight. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Kris Bubic.
