Gremlins Softball Sweeps 'Dogs – Thursday Sports Wrap

In high school softball yesterday, Houghton swept Hancock. The Gremlins came from behind to win the first game 9-7, then took the nightcap 8-2. Colleen Toorongian won the first game in relief, then went the distance to win the second game. Cassidy Becia had two hits, two walks and scored four runs in the finale.

On ths softball schedule today…
– Calumet plays at Jeffers.
– Baraga plays at L’Anse. We’ll bring you the first game of that doubleheader beginning around 3:45 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In baseball today…
– L’Anse plays at Calumet. That’s a makeup for the rainout on Tuesday.

The Detroit Tigers’ struggles against the Cleveland Indians continued with a 4-0 loss last night. Cleveland starter Corey Kluber held Detroit to just five hits in the complete-game shutout. All four of the Indians’ runs came in the fourth inning off Anibal Sanchez, who went seven innings, and gave up four hits.

That series concludes in Cleveland tonight. Michael Fulmer will start for Detroit – filling in again for Shane Greene, who’s still recovering from the blister on his pitching hand. Trevor Bauer will counter for Cleveland. Hear the first pitch at 6:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t hold a late lead, and fell to the Los Angeles Angels 7-3. Los Angeles broke the game open by scoring four runs in the eighth inning off Tyler Thornburg and Blaine Boyer. They added an insurance run in the ninth. The Bullpen meltdown spoiled a quality start by Zach Davies. Hernan Perez homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers open a four-game series in Cincinnati this evening. Chase Anderson will pitch against Alfredo Simon.

NHL
In last night’s only NHL playoff game, the Penguins skated past the Capitals 3-2 in overtime. Pittsburgh leads that second-round series three games to one.

NBA
In last night’s only NBA playoff contest, the Cavaliers defeated the Hawks 123-98. Cleveland leads that second-round set two games to none.
