In girls high school tournament basketball play Friday night…
– In Class B at Houghton, Houghton defeated Escanaba 45-30 to win the district title. The Gremlins (15-6) will face Kalkaska (20-2) in the Regional semifinal Tuesday evening. The Blazers eliminated Cheboygan 60-32 Friday night. Tip-off is at 7:00 at Manistique. Our pregame coverage will begin around 6:40 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
– In Class C, Calumet will meet Negaunee in the Regional semifinal Tuesday evening. The Miners (17-5) ousted Gwinn 75-41 Friday evening. Calumet (22-0) defeated Hancock Wednesday to win its District title. Tip-off will be at 6:00 at Marquette.
– In Class D at Ontonagon, Chassell used a stifling defense to stun Ontonagon 47-30. The Gladiators led 20-18 at halftime, but the Panthers outscored them 17-2 in the third quarter to take control. Chassell’s Sydney Danison led all scorers with 21 points. Julia Pietila added 13. The aggressive Panther defense harassed Ontonagon star Lori Wardynski all night, allowing her just three two-point field goals. She also sank four free throws, and finished with 10 points to lead the Gladiators. Chassell (12-11) will meet Stephenson (21-2) in the Regional semifinal at Kingsford. The Eagles routed North Central 71-37 Friday night. Tip-off is at 6:00 Eastern Time on Tuesday. Our pregame coverage will begin around 5:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In the final boys regular-season basketball game Friday night, Hancock edged Bessemer 63-60 in a game that was rescheduled from February 2nd.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team blanked Northern Michigan University 4-0 in their final regular-season game at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena Friday night. Alex Petan scored the eventual game-winner just four-and-a-half minute into the first period. Brent Baltus, Matt Roy and Jake Lucchini also scored for the Huskies. Jamie Phillips made 21 saves to secure the shutout. The Huskies have won 20 games in back-to-back seasons for the first time in more than three decades. They’ll close the regular season against the Wildcats in Marquette tonight.

Bowling Green lost to Alabama Huntsville 7-5 Friday night, so MTU now holds sole possession of second place in the WCHA – two points ahead of the Falcons, and two points behind Minnesota State.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team continued to struggle on its spring trip to Clermont, Florida. Friday, the Lions collected only two hits while losing to Elizabethtown College 12-0, and then managed only three hits in an 18-1 loss to Roger Williams University. The Lions will wrap up their southern trip today, with games against the University of Mount Union and Cornell College.

The Finlandia baseball team dropped two games to the College of Old Westbury on Friday, 10-1 and 9-0. Today, they’ll face Eastern Nazarene College and Rockford University.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines fell 6-3 to the Fond du Lac Bears Friday night. Logan Rastello, Josh Harju and Tyler Loukus scored for Calumet. The Wolverines visit the West Bend Bombers tonight.

The score of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game at West Bend Friday night was not reported. The Pioneers play at Fond du Lac tonight.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will play at Chicago tomorrow afternoon. Face-off is at 5:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons visit the New York Knicks tonight. Tip-off is at 7:00 on A 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers got only two hits, but shut out the New York Yankees 3-0 Friday. Miguel Cabrera’s homer in the third inning drove in all of Detroit’s runs. Justin Verlander gave up just one hit over two innings in his first start of the spring. The Tigers face the Nationals this afternoon. The first pitch is at 1:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Seattle Mariners 5-2 on Friday. Wily Peralta allowed just one over two innings in his first spring start. Minor-leaguer Andy Wilkins homered for the Crew. The Brewers play the Athletics this afternoon.
