Gremlins, Panthers Earn Boys Hoops Wins – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night, Jeffers skated past Cheboygan 4-2. Matthew Halonen scored twice for the Jets. Brent Heinonen and and Jackson Rocchi also scored. Noah Nettel made 16 saves.

In high school swimming tomorrow, Houghton joins Sault Ste. Marie at the Marquette Triangular.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

The Michigan Tech hockey team entertains fourth-ranked Clarkson for a pair of non-conference games this weekend. Faceoffs are at 7:07 tonight and 6:07 tomorrow night at the SDC.

The NMU hockey team will host Minnesota State tonight and tomorrow night.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams will host Northern Michigan University Sunday afternoon. The women’s contest will start at 1:00, and the men’s game at 3:00. 

Finlandia

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team will play at Maranatha Baptist tomorrow afternoon.

Great Lakes Hockey League

The Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines will play a home-and-home series this weekend. Tonight’s game starts at 7:30 at the Colosseum, with tomorrow’s contest at 7:30 at the Dee.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings broke their 12-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets last night. Robby Fabbri had two goals and an assist. Darren Helm, Filip Zadina and Filip Hronek also scored. Jonathan Bernier made 26 saves.

Detroit made a minor-league trade yesterday, sending Finnish defenseman Oliwer Kaski to Carolina for defenseman Kyle Wood.

The Wings visit the Montreal Canadiens tomorrow. Coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost to the Dallas Mavericks 122-111 in Mexico City last night. Andre Drummond paced Detroit with 23 points and 15 rebounds.

The Pistons visit the Houston Rockets tomorrow night.

NFL

In last night’s NFL contest, the Baltimore Ravens outscored the New York Jets 42-21.

Sunday, the Detroit Lions host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a 1:00 game on 99.3 The Lift. The Green Bay Packers entertain the Chicago Bears in a 1:00 contest.

The Lions placed defensive tackle Da’Shawn Hand on injured reserve yesterday, ending a season that has been torpedoed by various ailments.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers agreed to terms with former New York Yankees catcher Andrew Romine yesterday. It’s a one-year deal worth just over four million dollars.

The Tigers also took a player from the Yankees in the Rule Five draft. Rony Garcia is a 21-year-old pitcher who has been used mostly as a starter. Detroit will need to keep Garcia on the roster all season, or offer him back to New York. The Tigers did not lose any players in the Rule Five draft.
