High School Volleyball Tourney
– In the high school volleyball tournament last night, at the Class D District semifinals at Lake Linden-Hubbell… Ontonagon eliminated Dollar Bay 3-1 (18-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-21). The Lakes ousted Baraga 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-21). The Gladiators and Lakes will play for the district title tomorrow night at 6:00 at Lake Linden.
– In Class C tournament play, L’Anse and Calumet play for the district crown tonight at 7:00 at Calumet.
– In Class B last night, Houghton rolled over Gladstone 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-9), and Kingsford dispatched Escanaba 3-0. The Gremlins and Flivvers will meet for the district title tomorrow night at Kingsford at 6:30 Eastern (5:30 Central). Link to video highlights of last night’s Class B action here.
MTU Hosts Finlandia
The MTU women’s basketball team hosts Finlandia in an exhibition tonight. Tip-off is at 7:00 at the SDC.
The 20th-ranked Michigan Tech football team is preparing to host 22nd-ranked Ashland on Saturday. Both teams still have a chance of reaching the NCAA tournament, and coach Tom Kearly says that really means the playoffs start now… KEARLY. Kickoff is at 1:00 at Sherman Field.
Finlandia Tournament Pairings Set
The schedules have been announced for the Great South Athletic Conference women’s soccer and volleyball tournaments. The Lions’ volleyball team is seeded third, and will open against Pine Manor tomorrow morning at 10:00. The Lions’ soccer team is seeded sixth, and will meet Wesleyan College tomorrow afternoon at 12:30. Both tournaments will be hosted by Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
NHL – Red Wings Fall in OT
Derick Brassard’s power play goal in overtime gave the Rangers a 4-3 victory over the Red Wings last night. Detroit looked to be headed home after regulation, but Tomas Tatar found the net with eight seconds remaining to force the extra period. The Wings host the Devils tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA – Pistons Claim First Win
The Detroit Pistons built an 18-point lead in the third quarter, then hung on to claim a 98-95 victory over the Knicks last evening. Greg Monroe scored 23 and grabbed 18 rebounds. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 20 points in Detroit’s first win for new coach Stan Van Gundy. The Pistons will entertain the Bucks tomorrow night.
