Gremlins, Kings, Lakes, Hornets Advance in Volleyball Tournament – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School
The high school volleyball tournament opened last night…
– Division Four District 98, Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Hancock 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 27-25). The Lakes will play Baraga tomorrow night at 7:00 in Baraga. L’Anse blanked Dollar Bay 3-0 (25-10, 25-4, 25-9). Kailyn Voskuhl had 10 aces and Brianna Keinz led the Purple Hornets with 11 kills. L’Anse will meet Chassell tomorrow night.
– Division Four District 97 at Watersmeet, Wakefield-Marenisco eliminated Ontonagon 3-0. The Cardinals will face Jeffers tomorrow at 5:45 in Watersmeet. Bessemer ousted Watersmeet 3-0, and will take on Ewen-Trout Creek tomorrow at 7:15 in Watersmeet.
– Division Three District 65, Calumet got past Ironwood 3-1 (25-15, 22-25, 25-16, 27-25), The Copper Kings will face Iron Mountain tomorrow at 5:00 at Norway. Norway will play West Iron County in the other district semifinal.
– Division Two District District 33, Houghton blanked Menominee 3-0. The Gremlins will face Escanaba tomorrow. Gladstone will meet Kingsford in the other district semifinal.

MTU
The Michigan Tech soccer team opens the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs this afternoon. The fourth-seeded Huskies will host fifth-seed Ashland at 3:00 at Sherman Field.

The Tech volleyball team is ranked 24th in the nation in this week’s American Volleyball Coaches Association poll.

Tech hockey forward Brian Halonen has been named named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team plays an exhibition match at Michigan State tonight.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons will face the Celtics in Boston tonight.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings visit the Columbus Blue Jackets this evening. Pregame begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the New England Patriots shut down the Buffalo Bills 25-6. If you played The Wolf Pro Football Challenge, you must have selected at least 13 games correctly to qualify to be our weekly winner.

MLB
The baseball free agent season has begun. Four Tigers are included in this year’s class. Victor Martinez is expected to retire. Shortstop Jose Iglesias, catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and pitcher Francisco Liriano are unlikely to be re-signed. The Brewers have three free agents – pitchers Gio Gonzalez and Wade Miley, and outfielder Curtis Granderson. Teams maintain exclusive negotiating rights with their free agents until Friday, at which time they hit the open market if no deal is reached.

The Calumet Copper Kings will face Traverse City St. Francis Saturday at 1:00 in the Division Six district final football game. The game will be played at Thirlby Field in Traverse City. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:35 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

The Finlandia University soccer teams will host the ACAA Tourney this weekend at McAfee Field. The women face Thomas More University in the semifinals Saturday at 10:00. The men will face Thomas More Saturday at 4:00. We’ll cover both semifinal games on 99.3 The Lift and TheLift.com, along with the championship games on Sunday, if the Lions advance.
