Gremlins, Kings and Jets Hockey All Earn Shutout Wins – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey Saturday…
– Houghton blanked Rochester United 2-0. Milo Schaefer’s power play goal in the second period was the game-winner. Tucker Tapani’s empty-netter sealed the win. Matthew Ryynanen made 19 saves.
– Calumet shut out Utica Eisenhower 6-0. Dean Loukus had two goals and two assists for the Copper Kings. Scott Loukus added one goal and two assists. Peter Larson, Gabe Coppo and Alex Mattila also scored, and Tom Erkkila had two assists. Alex Studebaker made 20 saves.
– Jeffers shut down Grosse Ile 2-0 at the Gaylord DIII Challenge.

In high school swimming Saturday, the Houghton boys and girls both placed third at Saturday’s triangular with Sault Sainte Marie in Marquette. On the girls side, Marquette took an easy win with 157 points, the Soo followed with 113, and Houghton had 57. The boys meet was closer, with Marquette at 119, the Soo at 108, and Houghton at 96. For the Gremlins, Davin Evans won the 200-meter individual medley and the 100-meter breaststroke. Archer Olson took the 500-meter freestyle, and the team of Evans, Connor Holombo, Ty Haataja, and Olson won the 200-meter freestyle relay.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

The Michigan Tech hockey team lost 4-2 to fourth-ranked Clarkson Saturday night. The Huskies took an early lead with two Alec Broetzman goals, but the Golden Knights scored four unanswered to take the game. Matt Jurusik made 22 saves.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team stunned top-ranked Minnesota State 4-1 Saturday night. The Wildcats scored two late empty-netters to cap off an otherwise close game.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams will host Northern Michigan University this afternoon. The women’s contest will start at 1:00, and the men’s game at 3:00. 

Finlandia

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team lost 56-47 at Maranatha Baptist Saturday afternoon. Bailey Froberg led the Lions with 16 points.

Great Lakes Hockey League

The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Calumet Wolverines 10-3 Saturday night.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings won their second straight game, edging the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 Saturday night. Tyler Bertuzzi and Mike Green scored for Detroit. Jonathan Bernier stopped 42 shots, and didn’t allow a goal until the final minute.

The Wings host the Los Angeles Kings tonight. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons outscored the Houston Rockets 115-107 Saturday night. Detroit played without Andre Drummond, who is recovering from allergic reaction to some avocados he ate during the team’s recent Mexican trip. Blake Griffin was sidelined in the second half with soreness in his knee. Luke Kennard led the Pistons with 22 points.

Detroit will host the Washington Wizards Monday.

NFL

In the NFL today, the Detroit Lions host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a 1:00 game on 99.3 The Lift. The Green Bay Packers entertain the Chicago Bears in a 1:00 contest.
