Houghton advanced to the Michigan high school hockey Division Three quarterfinals with a 3-2 victory over Calumet yesterday. Goals from Carson Stevens and P.J. Donnelly gave the Gremlins a 2-0 lead after the first period. Jiseung Choi’s goal in the third period made it 3-0. The Copper Kings pulled their goalie and closed the gap with tallies by Sam Erkkila and Rylan Anderson in the final 24 seconds, but Houghton held on for the win.

The Michigan Tech hockey team closed its regular season with a 3-0 loss at Northern Michigan University last night. Tech concludes the regular season with a 14-18-1 overall record, and a 13-12-3-1 mark in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Huskies are seeded fifth in the WCHA playoffs, and will play at Bowling Green State University next weekend. NMU is seeded second, and will host Alaska-Anchorage.

The Detroit Red Wings lost 3-1 to the Arizona Coyotes last night. Dylan Larkin scored Detroit’s only goal. Jimmy Howard made 41 saves. The Wings visit the Colorado Avalanche Tuesday. Pregame coverage begins at 8:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Detroit Pistons walloped the Cleveland Cavaliers 129-93 yesterday. Luke Kennard scored 26 points, as coach Dwayne Casey rested his starters late in the blowout. The Pistons host the Toronto Raptors this evening. Pregame coverage starts at 5:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

Miguel Cabrera hit his first home run of the spring, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Atlanta Braves 7-4 in Grapefruit League play yesterday. Brandon Dixon also homered for Detroit. Jordan Zimmermann gave up a run on three hits over three innings. The Tigers will split their squad for games against the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon. The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Chicago Cubs 7-4 in Cactus League action. Travis Shaw and Lucas Erceg homered. Chase Anderson threw three scoreless innings. The Brewers will play the Cincinnati Reds today.
CopperDog 150
Rita Wehseler maintained her lead after the second stage of the 10th annual CopperDog 150 yesterday. Running with just eight dogs in the 10-dog event, Wehseler turned in the fifth-fastest time of the day, but it was good enough to keep her seven minutes ahead of Ryan Anderson overall. Frank Moe is 15 minutes off the lead, in third place. Local mushers Tom Bauer and Becky Bean are 14th and 15th.
Both the three-stage 150 and the two-stage CopperDog 80 will wrap up today. Mushers will begin leaving Copper Harbor at 8:30 this morning, and will begin arriving at the finish line in downtown Calumet shortly after noon. Calumet musher Jerry Trudell leads the CopperDog 80, six-and-a-half minutes ahead of Alex LaPlante, and 18 minutes up on Lynne Witte.
