Gremlins Hockey Wins Again – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In hockey last night…
• Camden Markham tallied a hat trick in the third period, as Houghton defeated Saginaw Heritage 6-3. Markham added two assists, to record a five-point night. Landon Stevens had two goals and two assists. Mike Maillette scored once, and Gab Carlson had three assists. Troy Povich made 16 saves. The Gremlins spotted Heritage an early 2-0 lead, but roared back to outshoot the Hawks 44-19.

Today…
• Houghton entertains Kingsford. Coverage will begin at 11:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Hancock entertains Saginaw Heritage at 1:00.

In girls basketball last night…
• Houghton outscored Negaunee 66-58.
• Calumet dispatched West Iron County 63-54.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City stopped Chassell 62-37.
• Baraga defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 57-36.
• Ontonagon shut down Wakefield-Marenisco 60-22.

In boys action…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell downed Baraga 55-48.
• Ontonagon fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 77-46.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team scored just 16 points in the first half, and lost to Lake Superior State 73-63 last evening. Brad Sinonson came off the bench to score 12 points, as the Huskies dropped their seventh straight game.

The Tech women’s team grabbed an early lead, saw it evaporate by halftime, then used a big third quarter to cruise past the Lakers 76-63. Sara Dax led the Huskies with 18 points.

Both Huskies teams will welcome Ferris State tomorrow – the women at 1:00, and the men at 3:00.

The Northern Michigan men’s team outscored Ferris 89-77 last night. The NMU women’s team fell to the Bulldogs 60-54.

Both Northern teams host Lake Superior State tomorrow.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team lost at Wisconsin-Stout 58-47 last night. Natalie Bartle scored 14 points.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team has the weekend off.

Northern lost 5-2 at Ferris State last night. The Wildcats and Bulldogs play again tonight in Big Rapids.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 8-0 at Concordia-Wisconsin last night. The Lions were outshot 59-23. Those teams skate again this afternoon in Mequon.

The Finlandia men’s team dropped a 5-3 decision to Hamline last evening. Cooper Hoheisel, James Eng and Nate Holm scored for the Lions, who were outshot 37-19. Those teams meet again this afternoon at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

College Soccer

The Finlandia University women’s soccer team has added a new recruit. Ashley Chinavare was All-Lenawee County honorable mention last season as a junior at Tecumseh High School.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines lost to the Mosinee Papermakers 5-2 last night. The Wolverines visit the Fond du Lac Bears tonight.

The Portage Lake Pioneers have the weekend off.

NHL

The Red Wings visit the Stars this afternoon. Coverage begins at 1:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons fell to the Grizzlies 114-103 last night. Bojan Bogdanovic led Detroit with 19 points.

The Pistons host the Lakers tomorrow.

NFL
