Gremlins Get First Win, Lakes Roll – Saturday Sports Wrap

MLB – Tigers Rained Out
Detroit Tigers Circle LogoThe Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians were rained out Friday night. The game will be made up as part of a traditional doubleheader on Sunday.

The Tigers will play a single game at Cleveland this evening. Justin Verlander will start against Cody Anderson. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Tigers’ officials are denying a report that the team has decided to fire manager Brad Ausmus at the end of the season. Team General Manager Al Avila said he was surprised by the report, and that the club’s evaluation of Ausmus continues.

Brewers LogoThe Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3 Friday night. Jimmy Nelson left the game in the sixth inning, was charged with four runs, and took the loss. Adam Lind homered for Milwaukee. Game details are here.

The Brewers continue that set at Pittsburgh tonight. Zach Davies will pitch against Jeff Locke.

Milwaukee has claimed outfielder Daniel Fields off waivers from the Detroit Tigers. He’s been assigned to Double-A Biloxi, and will join them for the Southern League playoffs.

– Houghton shut out Ironwood 38-0. The Gremlins scored on their first three possessions – a 14-yard run by quarterback Jordan Reynolds, a 14-yard run by Sean Hyslop, and a 55-yard Reynolds to Hyslop pass play. Quentin Stachowiak scored on a 22-yard run in the second period. Sam Collaer capped the scoring with a 72-yard run on the first play from scrimmage in the second half.
Lake Linden Hubbell Logo– Calumet fell to Ishpeming 34-8.
– Hancock lost to Northland Pines 55-28.
– Lake Linden Hubbell rolled over Baldwin 48-20 at the Superior Dome.
– L’Anse dropped a 20-12 decision to Westwood.

The Team Copper Country U18 hockey team is in Sault Ste. Marie. They’ll face the Soo Indians today at noon and tomorrow at 10:00, and take on Soo Canada this evening at 6:00.

Six new members will be inducted into the Calumet High School Athletic Hall of Fame today. The ceremony begins at 11:00 at the school commons. You can read about the new members here.

MTU Huskies LogoThe Michigan Tech volleyball team improved to 6-0 on the season by shutting out Minot State 3-0 (25-14, 25-18 and 28-26) at the Upper Iowa Invitational in Fayette, Iowa, yesterday. Full details are here. The Huskies will take South Dakota Mines and Saint Cloud State today.

The MTU women’s tennis team lost to Walsh 7-2 yesterday afternoon, and play at Ashland this morning.

Both MTU cross country teams will take part in a race at Kenosha today.

The Michigan Tech football team hosts Malone this afternoon. Kickoff is at 1:00 at Sherman Field.

The Northern Michigan University football team entertains Quincy this afternoon.

Finlandia
Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia University football team travels to Wisconsin-Oshkosh today.

The Finlandia volleyball team dropped the first two games at its own invitational Friday. The Lions opened with a 3-0 (18-25, 9-25, 13-25) loss to Wisconsin-Superior (details here), and then fell 3-0 (11-25, 10-25, 22-25) to the Milwaukee School of Engineering (details here). Today, Finlandia will take on Rockford University at noon, and Northland College at 3:00 at the Paavo Nurmi Center.

The Finlandia University women’s soccer team will host Mount Mary University tomorrow at noon.

NFL
The Detroit Lions open their regular season tomorrow afternoon at San Diego. Kickoff is at 4:05.

The Packers begin their regular season at Chicago on Sunday. Kickoff is at 1:00.
