The Houghton hockey team fell to Cranbrook 4-0 in the Division Three state title game Saturday afternoon in Plymouth. The Cranes scored three times in the first nine minutes, and outshot the Gremlins 50-13. On Friday, the Gremlins got off to a quick start, and defeated Flint Powers Catholic 4-1 in the semifinals.
In the boys’ Class D high school basketball District championship game at Ontonagon Friday night, Lake Linden-Hubbell held off a stubborn Jeffers squad, and advanced to the Regional semifinal with a 46-31 victory. MTU
The second-seeded MTU hockey team advanced to the WCHA Final FIve tournament with a 3-0 victory over Alabama-Huntsville Saturday night. Blake Hietala’s power play goal in the first period was all the Huskies needed. Tanner Kero added a goal in the second period, and Mark Auk netted an insurance tally in the third. Jamie Phillips made 18 saves. The Huskies opened the WCHA tournament with the longest game in school history Friday night. Tyler Heinonen’s goal with 71 seconds remaining in the third overtime period finally gave the Huskies a 1-0 victory. Tech will face Bowling Green Friday night in St. Paul.
The Falcons advanced by sweeping Northern Michigan with a 4-1 victory on Saturday, and a 3-2 overtime win on Friday.
The MTU women’s basketball team ended its NCAA tournament run with a stunning 70-51 loss to Ashland Saturday. The Huskies trailed 49-19 at halftime. Danielle Blake led Tech with 22 points. MTU ends its season with a record of 28-3. The Huskies won the GLIAC regular season and tournament titles.
Ashland will face Lewis in the title game Monday night at 7:00 at the SDC.
The Tech men’s team fell 74-53 to Indianapolis in the opening round of the NCAA tournament at Bellarmine University in Louisville Saturday. Ben Stelzer finished his college career with 21 points, but the rest of the starting lineup combined for just 17. The Huskies wrap up the season with a record of 19-9.
NHL – Red Wings Fall to Flyers
The struggling Detroit Red Wings fell to the Flyers 7-2 Saturday. Jimmy Howard took the loss in goal. Detroit has dropped four of its last five games, and skates at Pittsburgh this afternoon. Face-off is at 12:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA – Pistons Drop 10th Straight
The sagging Detroit Pistons lost 88-85 at Salt Lake City Saturday night. Greg Monroe led Detroit with 13 points and 16 rebounds. The Pistons have now lost 10 in a row, and host the Grizzlies Tuesday night. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
MLB
Anibal Sanchez gave up four runs over four innings, as half of the Tigers lost to the Phillies 5-4 Saturday afternoon. Most of the damage against Sanchez came in the first inning. He allowed just one hit – a solo home run – over his final three innings. The other half of the Tigers lost 4-1 to the Yankees. Kyle Lobstein gave up a run over three innings. The Tigers face the Marlins this afternoon. Alfredo Simon will start.
The Brewers fell to the Cubs 10-5 Saturday. Starter Jimmy Nelson gave up five runs over 2-2/3rds innings. The Brewers split their squad for games against the Athletics and Rangers this afternoon.
The Brewers have officially brought back reliever Francisco Rodriguez. The club announced a two-year deal on Saturday.

ESPN is reporting that former Detroit Lions running back Reggie Bush has signed a contract with the San Francisco 49ers.
