Gremlins Dump ‘Dogs for First Football Win – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football Friday…
• Calumet fell to Negaunee 20-14. The game was tied 7-7 at halftime. James Thomson ran the ball in from 14 yards out for the Miners on their first possession. Calumet responded late in the half with a 29-yard scoring pass and run from Garrett Peterson to Kent Koskela. The Miners opened the second half with a 26-yard Thomson touchdown scamper. Later in the third quarter, Calumet’s Gavin Sturos intercepted a Ty Jacobsen pass, and returned it to the Negaunee 30-yard line. An additional 15-yard penalty set up a short Copper Kings touchdown drive, capped by a one-yard Peterson plunge. The extra point kick was blocked, leaving Calumet trailing 14-13. A late Negaunee drive that ended with a seven-yard Kai Lacar touchdown run sealed the win.
• Houghton outscored Hancock 28-14 in the official WestPAC Copper Division meeting between the two teams. They will face each other again in a non-conference game October 20th for the Copper Bowl.
• L’Anse lost to West Iron County 22-0.
• Ontonagon was supposed to host Carney-Nadeau, but the Wolves have canceled their season.

 • Lake Linden-Hubbell has filled an empty weekend by adding a home game against Norway this afternoon at 1:30.

In high school volleyball last night…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City v Wakefield-Marenisco – no report.

College Volleyball

Both the Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan volleyball teams are playing at the Minnesota-Duluth Tournament this weekend…
• The Huskies lost to fifth-ranked Saint Cloud State 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 17-25, 21-25) yesterday. Freshman Kate Loch led the Huskies with 15 kills in her first college game. Tech will play undefeated Southern New Hampshire this morning, and 23rd-ranked Central Washington this evening.
• The Wildcats fell 3-0 (19-25, 12-25, and 17-25) to Central Washington yesterday, and also lost 3-0 (17-25, 23-25, and 20-25) to Southern New Hampshire. Northern will face seventh-ranked Minnesota-Duluth tonight.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team opens its season at home against Hillsdale today. Kickoff is at 1:00.

The Northern Michigan football team hosts Lake Erie College today at 1:00.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at Illinois-Springfield yesterday. Fifth-year senior defender Cassie Bonifas scored her first goal for the Huskies, who visit Lewis University tomorrow.

The Northern women’s soccer team blanked Lewis 3-0 yesterday, led by Molly Pistorius’ second hat-trick of the season. The Wildcats play at Illinois-Springfield tomorrow.

The Northern Michigan men’s soccer team plays at Thomas More today.

MLB

The Tigers collected just three hits in a 6-0 loss to the White Sox last night. Reese Olson tossed six innings of no-hit ball, but left in the seventh as Chicago scored twice. The Sox added four runs off Tyler Holton and Brendan White in the eighth.

The Tigers host the White Sox again tonight. Tarik Skubal will start against former Tiger José Ureña. Coverage will begin at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Prospect Sawyer Gipson-Long will be called up from Toledo to start tomorrow’s game for Detroit. It will be his major-league debut.

The Brewers pounded out 16 hits on the way to an 8-2 drubbing of the Yankees last evening. Willy Adames homered. Brice Turang and Carlos Santana each had three hits.

The Brewers play in New York again this afternoon. Wade Miley will start against Michael King.

The Cubs and Reds both lost, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division stands at three games over Chicago, and six-and-a-half games over Cincinnati.

NFL

The Packers begin their campaign tomorrow afternoon at Chicago.
