Gremlins, Bulldogs Earn Hockey Wins – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last night…
– Hancock blanked Kingsford 2-0.
– Houghton routed Negaunee 8-1.

In girls basketball last night…
– Jeffers defeated Houghton 49-41.
– L’Anse downed Hancock 41-32.
– Calumet stopped Ontonagon 44-36. Ava Anderson and Celia Kiilunen each scored 10 for the Copper Kings. Ontonagon’s Teddy Menigoz led all scorers with 14 points.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell cruised past Bessemer 51-31.
– Chassell overwhelmed Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 45-7.
– Baraga doubled up Republic-Michigamme 56-28.

In high school boys basketball last night…
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City v Watersmeet – postponed, no make-up date announced
– Ewen-Trout Creek lost to Wakefield-Marenisco 62-52.

In boys action tonight, Houghton plays at Gwinn.

Finlandia
Both Finlandia University basketball teams entertain the College of Saint Scholastica tonight. The women’s game tips off at 5:30 at the Paavo Nurmi Center, with the men’s contest following at 7:30.

The Lions have introduced a new softball player. Trinity Kimmel can play several positions, and currently attends the Romulus Summit Academy in suburban Detroit.

Mariah Austin has been named American Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Austin recorded double-doubles in Finlandia’s victories over Great Lakes Christian and Silver Lake College.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 last night. Andreas Athanasiou scored both Detroit goals. Jimmy Howard took the loss, with 22 saves. The Wings have dropped eight of their last nine games, and visit the Winnipeg Jets on Friday. Pregame coverage will start at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Detroit Pistons start a west coast trip against the Lakers in Los Angeles tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 10:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
