Gremlins, Bulldogs Advance in Hockey Tourney – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

Houghton and Hancock will meet for the hockey regional title, following semifinal victories Saturday.
• Top-seed Houghton dispatched Calumet 4-1. Goals by Mike Maillette and Tanner Flachs gave the Gremlins an early lead. Luca Matous got one back for the Copper Kings, but third period goals by Jack Sayen and Oscar Peterson sealed the win for Houghton. Bryant Lee made 11 saves.
• Second-seed Hancock ended Jeffers’ season with a 6-4 victory.

The Gremlins and Bulldogs will play for the regional crown Wednesday at 7:00 at the SDC. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.

At the JV hockey tournament Saturday, Houghton defeated Hancock, and Calumet got past Marquette. The Bulldogs and Sentinels will play in the consolation match this morning at 9:00 at the SDC. The Gremlins and Copper Kings will play for the title at 11:00. Coverage of the championship game will begin at 10:40 on KBear 102.3.

At the Division Two regional bowling tournament in Gaylord…
• The Calumet boys placed seventh out of 12 teams in team competition Friday. Xander Hoffman finished 20th in singles competition Saturday.
• The Calumet girls finished 10th out of 11 teams in team competition Friday. Kaili Kantner placed 33rd in singles competition Saturday.

At the Division Four regional bowling tournament in Traverse City…
• The L’Anse boys team finished ninth out of 13 teams in team competition Friday. Sam Hiltunen and Kydan Dean placed 23rd and 24th in singles competition Saturday.
• The L’Anse girls placed seventh out of seven teams in team competition Friday. Willow Rexford earned a ninth-place finish in singles competition Saturday.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team earned a weekend sweep at Bowling Green with a 3-1 victory Saturday. The game was scoreless until the third period, when the Falcons found the net. The Huskies responded with goals by Evan Orr, Chase Pietila and Logan Pietila. Blake Pietila made 19 saves to earn his 71st career win.

The Northern Michigan hockey squad skated to a 1-1 tie at Ferris State Saturday. The Bulldogs claimed the bonus CCHA standings point in a shootout. Rylan Van Unen scored the Wildcats’ only goal. Beni Halasz stopped 17 of 18 shots.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams earned victories at Saginaw Valley State Saturday.
• Isabella Lenz scored a career-best 23 points in the women’s 70-58 win.
• The men’s squad held off a late Cardinals’ surge, and logged an 84-79 victory. Marcus Tomashek led all scorers with 26 points. Dan Gherezgher added 23.

The Northern Michigan teams split their games at Wayne State.
• The women won their sixth straight, 80-74. Makaylee Kuhn scored 24, and Jacy Weisbrod added 22.
• The men’s team lost 84-80. Carson Smith scored 22. Despite the loss, the Wildcats clinched at least a share of the GLIAC title, because of a loss by Lake Superior State.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines fell to the Mosinee Papermakers 8-3 Saturday.

NHL

The Red Wings scored four first period goals, and sailed past the Blues 6-1 Saturday. Alec DeBrincat found the net twice, and Patrick Kane, Michael Rasmussen, Robby Fabbri and J.T. Compher also scored. Alex Lyon stopped 22 shots.

The Wings visit the Blackhawks tonight. Coverage will begin at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

Paolo Banchero’s three-point play with less than a second remaining lifted the Magic to a 112-109 victory over the Pistons Saturday. The two-point basket and follow-up field goal came after Cade Cunningham had tied the game for Detroit with 12 seconds to go. Cunningham led the team with 26 points.

The Pistons visit the Knick tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers’ Grapefruit League season got off to a rough start Saturday, with a 22-10 loss to the Yankees. Eight of New York’s runs came in the top of the ninth inning. Detroit scored four in the bottom of the frame. Andy Ibáñez homered for the Bengals. Detroit pitchers issued 14 walks, and hit five batters.

The Tigers face the Rays this afternoon. Alex Faedo will start for Detroit.

The Brewers outslugged the Padres 11-7. Wes Clarke hit two home runs for the Crew.

The Brewers will face the Rockies this afternoon. Colin Rea will start.
