MLB

Matthew Boyd struggled again, as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Chicago White Sox 7-5 yesterday afternoon. Boyd gave up two runs in the first inning, and another in the third. After a solo Jonathan Schoop home run in the first, Detroit surged ahead with four runs in the fourth, powered by a two-run Grayson Greiner double, and a two-run homer by Willi Castro. The lead didn’t last long. Chicago forced Boyd from the game by scoring four in the top of the fifth.

The Tigers have today off. A scheduled doubleheader to make up games missed against the Cardinals was canceled because Saint Louis is still undergoing COVID-19 testing. Detroit will host Cleveland tomorrow. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Tigers first baseman C.J. Cron will need surgery on his injured knee, but hasn’t ruled out the prospect of playing before that takes place. He’s currently wearing a brace, and says it will take some time before they know how stable it will be. Cron was hit on the knee by a batted ball Monday. A ligament was damaged when his kneecap popped out of place.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Minnesota Twins 12-2 last evening. Byron Buxton hit two home runs for Minnesota. Eric Lauer didn’t make it through the fourth inning, and was charged with seven runs.

The Brewers open a series against the Cubs in Chicago tonight. Brett Anderson will start against Yu Darvish.

College

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has suspended all sports contests through the end of the year. That means no football, volleyball, soccer, cross country or tennis this autumn for Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan University. It also delays the starts of the men’s and women’s basketball seasons. The decision does not affect hockey, which is played under the auspices of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Following the decision by the Big 10 and the PAC-12 to cancel their fall seasons, the Big 12 has announced that it plans to proceed with its football program. A conference-only schedule is tentatively set to begin September 26th. Yesterday, the Big East Conference canceled its fall sports.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers have signed wide receiver Malik Turner, who played in 21 games and made 17 catches for the Seattle Seahawks over the past two seasons, after being signed as an undrafted free agent. To make room on the roster, the Packers released safety Frankie Griffin.
