College Hockey
The Great Lakes Invitational will change location and format this year. Instead of being a tournament played at one location in Detroit, it will be structured as a showcase, with games at Yost Arena in Ann Arbor, and Munn Arena in East Lansing. Michigan Tech will play at the University of Michigan December 29th, and at Michigan State December 30th. Western Michigan University will play at MSU on the 29th, and at U of M on the 30th.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings focused on size and defense in the opening round of the NHL draft last night. With the sixth overall pick, general manager Steve Yzerman selected 6’5″ Swedish defenseman Simon Edvinsson. The Wings then traded up to take 6’6″ Canadian goaltender Sebastian Cossa with the 15th pick. Cossa was the first goalie picked in the draft. Detroit sent the 23rd, 48th and 138th picks to the Mavericks in exchange.
The Buffalo Sabres chose Canadian defenseman Owen Power with the first pick. The Seattle Kraken selected center Matthew Beniers. Both currently play at the University of Michigan.
Rounds two through seven of the draft take place today. Despite giving up some picks last night, and in the recent trade for goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic and defenseman Nick Leddy, the Wings still have a half-dozen selections remaining.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers’ seven-game win streak ended with a 5-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals last night. Wily Peralta pitched into the sixth inning, but gave up all five KC runs. Willi Castro homered.
The Tigers visit the Royals again tonight. Casey Mize will start against Carlos Hernandez. Coverage will begin at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit has signed top draft choice Jackson Jobe. The high school pitcher from Oklahoma City agreed to a $6.9 million bonus as the third overall selection. The Tigers also inked their second-round pick, Texas high school shortstop Izaac Pacheco, for a $2.75 million bonus. Pitcher Ty Madden, who was taken with a competitive balance pick between the first and second rounds, signed last week.
The Milwaukee Brewers ripped the Chicago White Sox 7-1 last night. The Crew broke open a close game with six runs in the seventh inning, powered by a Tyrone Taylor grand slam. Working under a pitch count for a mid-season break, Freddy Peralta threw four shutout innings. Adrian Houser relieved him, and earned the win.
The Brewers host the Sox again tonight. Corbin Burnes will pitch against Carlos Rodón.
The Cleveland Indians have announced their new team name beginning next season will be the Cleveland Guardians. The name comes from a series of statues that are mounted on the city’s downtown Hope Memorial Bridge.
NFL
There will be at least one Rodgers playing for the Green Bay Packers this season. The Pack has agreed to terms with third-round draft pick Amari Rodgers, the receiver from Clemson. As to whether there’ll be another Rodgers (Aaron) to throw passes to him – the jury’s still out.
