Girls Hoops Wins for ‘Dogs, Panthers, Vikes and Bolts – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
In girls basketball last night…
– The Houghton-Westwood game was snowed out. No make-up date has been announced.
– Hancock edged Jeffers 48-45.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City got past Republic-Michigamme 44-37.
– Chassell cruised past Wakefield-Marenisco 66-27. Milly Allen paced the Panthers with 16 points, and Sydney Danison added 15.
– Baraga shut down Bessemer 58-22.
– Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Ontonagon 66-34. Elise Besonen scored 21 for the Panthers, who held the Gladiators to just four points in the second half.

In hockey, Calumet fell to U-D Jesuit 4-2 last night. The Cubs built a 4-0 lead before late goals by Sam Erkkila and Dean Loukus closed the gap a bit. Those teams play again tonight at the Colosseum.

The Houghton swim team will compete at Marquette today.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s hockey team dropped a 6-1 decision to Wisconsin-Superior yesterday afternoon at the Houghton County Arena. Kait Ryynanen’s power play goal was the only score for the Lions. Annah Smiddy made 38 saves in net, as FinnU was outshot 44-10. The Lions host the Yellowjackets again this afternoon at 4:00.

The Finlandia men’s team fell 4-2 to Lawrence University last night. Connor Hannon and Hunter Kero scored for the Lions. Kero won nine face-offs in his Finlandia debut. The Lions will host Marian University this evening at 7:00.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team plays at Bay College this afternoon.

MTU
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams will play at Lake Superior State today.

The Tech hockey team has the weekend off.

NMU
Both Northern Michigan University basketball teams play at Ferris State this afternoon.

A trio of power play goals helped the NMU hockey team upend 14th-ranked Bowling Green 5-2 last night. Those teams play again tonight in Marquette.

GLHL
Both the Calumet Wolverines and the Portage Lake Pioneers are off this weekend.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons visit the Chicago Bulls this evening.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings return to action this afternoon at Pittsburgh. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift. After some concerns midweek that goaltender Jimmy Howard might miss the game because of a minor knee injury, he told reporters Friday that he will be ready to play.

NFL
The NFL Divisional playoff round will take place this weekend. Today, the Falcons meet the Eagles at 4:35, and the Titans play the Patriots at 8:15. Tomorrow, the Jaguars face the Steelers at 1:05, and the Saints take on the Vikings at 4:40. Hear all the games on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers have signed contracts for the 2018 season with three more of their arbitration-eligible players. Shane Greene and Alex Wilson will each make 1.9-million dollars. Nicholas Castellanos will make 6-million. Shortstop José Iglesias is the only player eligible for arbitration who remains unsigned.

The Milwaukee Brewers have inked deals with all four of their arbitration-eligible players. Jimmy Nelson, Corey Knebel, Hernan Perez and Jonathan Villar all signed one-year deals.
