In girls high school basketball tournament action last night…

 In Division Two…
Gladstone stunned previously unbeaten Menominee 46-45. The Braves will host Kingsford tomorrow.
Houghton begins play tomorrow at home against Escanaba. Our coverage will begin at 5:10 in advance of a 5:30 tipoff on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

In Division Three…
– Hancock defeated Ironwood 54-23. The Bulldogs led by one at halftime, and outscored the Red Devils 19-0 in the third quarter. D’Andra Kero led Hancock with 18 points. The Bulldogs will host West Iron County tomorrow at 7:00. We’ll join the game in progress after the Houghton contest on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.
Calumet overpowered Norway 73-30. Elli Djerf and Marybeth Halonen each scored 20 for the Copper Kings. Calumet will entertain Iron Mountain tomorrow. We’ll broadcast the game on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com.

In Division Four, District 98…
– Baraga eliminated Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 77-20. The Vikings will host Jeffers tomorrow night in one semifinal. Chassell will play at Lake Linden-Hubbell in the other.
– In Division Four, District 97 – L’Anse got past Ontonagon 42-37. Taylor Sanregret scored 14 for the Purple Hornets. Teddy Menigoz led the Gladiators with 12. The Purple Hornets will host Watersmeet tomorrow. Ewen-Trout Creek ousted Wakefield-Marenisco 70-30. The Panthers will entertain Bessemer tomorrow.

In boys regular-season play last night, Brad Simonson scored 42 points, as Houghton downed Westwood 79-63.

On the boys schedule tonight…

– Hancock tips off at Lake Linden-Hubbell.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City journeys to Republic-Michigamme.
– Jeffers plays at Baraga.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

The GLIAC basketball tournament opens tonight.

The Michigan Tech men’s team is seeded third, and hosts Saginaw Valley State at 6:00 at the SDC. The Tech women’s team is seeded seventh, and plays at Grand Valley State.

The Northern Michigan men’s team is seeded eight, and visits top-seeded Ferris State. The Wildcats women’s team is seeded fifth, and plays at Wisconsin-Parkside.

Michigan Tech’s Kyle Monroe has again been named the GLIAC North Division Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. It’s the third straight week he’s won the honor, and the eighth time this season. Monroe scored 32 points in the Huskies’ win over NMU last week, and set a new GLIAC career scoring record.

Finlandia University

In Florida, the Finlandia softball team lost 17-12 to Drew University and 17-2 to Albion College yesterday. In the first game, Denia Bent had three hits, and drove in four runs. Harlee Caster had two hits and two RBI in the second contest. The softball team has today off.

The Finlandia baseball team opened its Florida campaign with a double-header loss to Rivier University yesterday – 12-8 in the first game, and 17-3 in the second. Christian Frederick had three doubles in the opening game.

The Lions play two against Alvernia University today. 

Two members of the Finlandia women’s basketball team have been honored by the American Collegiate Athletic Association. Katie Lundeen was named to the all-conference first team, and Carsyn Osterman earned second team honors. Lions coach Mariah Dunham shared the Coach of the Year honor with Julie Plant of Pine Manor.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost 2-1 to the Colorado Avalanche last night. Anthony Mantha scored Detroit’s only goal. Jonathan Bernier stopped 25 shots.

The Wings host the Chicago Blackhawks Friday. Coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons entertain the Oklahoma City Thunder tomorrow.

MLB

In spring baseball, the Detroit Tigers played to an 11-11 tie with the Boston Red Sox yesterday. Travis Demeritte hit two home runs, and Jake Rogers knocked one out. Starter Daniel Norris allowed four runs on six hits over two innings.

The Tigers face the Minnesota Twins this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and play the San Diego Padres today.

Houghton will meet Calumet for the regional hockey championship tomorrow night. Our pregame coverage will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
