Girls Hoops Tourney Starts Tonight, Boys Brackets Revealed – Monday Sports Wrap

High School

The girls high school basketball district playoffs open tonight.
• In Division Two semifinals, Houghton plays at Kingsford. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. Escanaba plays at Cheboygan in the other semifinal.
• In Division Three quarterfinals, Ishpeming will face Gwinn. The winner will play Hancock Wednesday. Westwood will play Negaunee. The winner will host Calumet Wednesday, with the broadcast on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• In Division Four, District 98 quarterfinals, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City will host Chassell at 6:00. The winner will play Baraga Wednesday. Jeffers will entertain L’Anse at 6:00. The winner will face Lake Linden-Hubbell Wednesday.
• In Division Four, District 97 quarterfinals at Bessemer, Ironwood will face Bessemer in the opening game. The winner will play Ontonagon Wednesday. Watersmeet and Wakefield-Marenisco will meet in the nightcap, with the winner to play Ewen-Trout Creek Wednesday.

The pairings have been announced for the first round of the boys playoffs next week.
• In Division Two, Houghton will play at Negaunee Monday night. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. The winner will host Kingsford on Wednesday. Escanaba and Gladstone will meet in the other semifinal Wednesday.
• In Division Three, Hancock hosts Gwinn Monday night. The winner will entertain Ishpeming Wednesday night. Calumet will play at Westwood in the other semifinal Wednesday, with coverage on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• In Division Four, District 98, Chassell will play at Baraga in one quarterfinal Monday. The winner will take on Jeffers in the semifinals Wednesday. GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Mosinee Papermakers 3-1 yesterday. The Pioneers have won seven straight.

NHL

The Red Wings visit the Senators tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings will be without Michael Rasmussen indefinitely. Rasmussen was hit on the knee by a puck Saturday. Coach Derek LaLonde said yesterday that it will be a couple of days before they know how much time he’ll miss.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Hornets this evening.

MLB

The Tigers lost to the Orioles 10-6 yesterday. Nick Maton, Matt Vierling and Jake Rogers homered for Detroit. The O’s scored nine of their runs in the fifth inning off Jace Fry and Layne Henderson.

The Tigers will face the Yankees tonight. Beau Brieske will start for Detroit.

The Brewers split their squad, and fell 11-4 to the Athletics, and 12-6 to the Rockies.

The Brewers will play the Royals this afternoon. Adrian Houser will start for Milwaukee.
