Twilight League
Garnet Garage reigns as this year’s Twilight Baseball League champions. The regular-season titlists claimed the tournament crown with a pair of one-run victories yesterday.
In the semifinals, Garnet dispatched Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker 6-5. REL-Mohawk Technology shaded Northern Driveline 1-0.
In the title match, Garnet scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning, then held on to defeat REL 5-4. Garnet sent 11 batters to the plate in that pivotal frame. They got just one hit, but took advantage of four walks and three hit batters. REL had opened the scoring in the top of the second when Alan Jurmu doubled home Ty Loukas. They narrowed the gap with three more runs in the top of the third, but couldn’t close the gap. Coy Budwig tossed a complete game to get the win, with three strikeouts.
MLB
The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the 10th inning to earn a 3-2 victory over the Yankees last evening in the MLB Little League Classic game. New York led 1-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth, with their only run coming off a Tarik Skubal wild pitch in the sixth. Colt Keith doubled, and scored on a two-out single by Jace Jung to force extra innings. Beau Brieske gave up a run in the top of the 10th. Detroit re-tied the contest when Zach McKinstry singled home designated runner Trey Sweeney. McKinstry then stole second base, and scored the winning run on a Parker Meadows single. Skubal completed six innings, giving up just three hits.
The Tigers have today off, and face the Cubs in Chicago tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
Riley Greene rejoined the Tigers yesterday, after three weeks off to recover from a hamstring strain. Justyn-Henry Malloy was sent back to Toledo to make room on the roster.
The Brewers blanked the Guardians 2-0 to claim their fifth straight win yesterday. The Crew scored once in the bottom of the first inning on a Willy Adames single, and plated another in the bottom of the second on an Eric Haase groundout. Colin Rea gave up just two hits over seven innings.
The Brewers also have today off, and begin a series at St. Louis tomorrow.
NFL
The Packers’ offense struggled in a 27-2 exhibition loss to the Broncos last evening. Backup quarterback candidates Michael Pratt and Sean Clifford combined to pass for just 80 yards. The Pack’s only score came late in the third quarter, when Zach Morton sacked Denver quarterback Zach Wilson in the end zone. None of Green Bay’s regular-season starters played in the game.
The Packers wrap up their preseason campaign Saturday at Baltimore.
Jake Bates’ 43-yard field goal as time expired gave the Lions a 24-23 exhibition victory over the Chiefs Saturday.
