MLB

The Tigers claimed their second straight walk-off win over the Dodgers yesterday with a dramatic 4-3 victory. L-A scored three runs in the first inning off Beau Brieske, but five Tigers relievers held them to just two more hits the rest of the game. Detroit got one run back in the fourth, and recouped another in the sixth. In the bottom of the ninth, Justyn-Henry Malloy singled home Zach McKinstry to tie the contest, then scored the winning run when pitcher Yohan Ramírez fielded a bunt by Wenceel Pérez, and threw the ball past third base and into left field.

The All-Star break begins today. The Tigers return to action Friday, when they visit the Blue Jays. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers snapped their three-game losing streak with a 9-3 win over the Nationals. Colin Rae took over for opener Rob Zastryzny in the second inning, and pitched through the seventh, allowing two runs. William Contreras, Garrett Mitchell and Willy Adames homered.

Milwaukee is off until Saturday, when they play at Minnesota.

Dallas Keuchel’s term with the Brewers turned out to be a brief one. After just four starts, he was designated for assignment after Saturday’s game. Joel Kuhnel has been called up from Nashville.

The Major League Baseball draft opened last night, with the Guardians taking Oregon State second baseman Travis Bazzana with the first pick. The Reds followed, and selected Wake Forest pitcher Chase Burns.

The Tigers used the 11th pick to take shortstop Bryce Rainer, whom many experts considered to be the top high school player in the draft. In the second round, they chose high school pitcher Owen Hall with the 49th pick. Detroit also had a competitive balance pick at number 72, and selected high school pitcher Ethan Schiefelbein.

With the 17th pick, the Brewers grabbed high school center fielder Braylon Payne, who is still just 17 years old. Milwaukee also had the 34th pick, acquired from the Orioles in the Corbin Burnes trade. They used it for power hitting Tennessee first baseman Blake Burke. The Brewers used their second-round pick – number 57 – to select high school pitcher Bryce Meccage. Milwaukee also had a late competitive balance pick, at number 67, and chose high school pitcher Chris Levonas.

Rounds three through 10 will take place today, and rounds 11 through 20 tomorrow.
