MLB
Michael Fulmer’s scoreless streak ended at 33-1/3rd innings last night, as the Detroit Tigers fell to the Kansas City Royals 10-3. Fulmer pitched shutout ball through five innings. He left in the sixth, after giving up a solo home run to Salvador Perez. The Royals proceeded to score nine runs in the seventh and eighth innings off relievers Shane Greene, Mark Lowe, and Blaine Hardy. Detroit’s only runs came in the ninth, on homers by Miguel Cabrera and Justin Upton.
The Tigers continue that series in Kansas City tonight. Matt Boyd will pitch against Edinson Volquez. Hear the first pitch at 8:15 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Detroit has sent reliever Drew VerHagen to the disabled list. VerHagen was optioned to the Toledo Mud Hens last month, where he began to experience numbness in his throwing hand. He has been diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome, a condition which limits blood flow to his arm. Team officials hope it can be addressed with physical therapy. If not, VerHagen may need surgery.
Justin Turner’s RBI single off Jeremy Jeffress in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last night. Turner also homered twice in the game, accounting for all of L-A’s runs.
The Brewers continue that set against the Dodgers at Los Angeles tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Mike Bolsinger.
NBA
The NBA championship will be decided tomorrow night. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors are tied at three wins per team.
The Detroit Pistons have traded guard Spencer Dinwiddie to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for center Cameron Bairstow. Both players are two-year veterans. Neither has seen much playing time. The deal may have prompted by salary cap considerations – Bairstow has an option in his contract for next season. If the Pistons decline it, it would open some salary cap room that they would not have received if they had simply released Dinwiddie.
NHL
Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk is expected to announce today if he will return to the Wings next season. It has been widely reported that Datsyuk would like to finish his career in his native Russia. He has been offered a contract to play with the St. Petersburg team in the Kontinental league there. Datsyuk has one season remaining in his contract with Detroit. If he leaves, the Wings would not need to pay him, but the $7.5-million dollar value would still count against the NHL salary cap.
