High School

In high school hockey Saturday…

• Houghton fell 4-2 to Howell. The Highlanders took an early lead with a first period goal. Houghton got goals from Brody Donnelly and Jace Deforge early in the second period to take the lead, but Howell tied the game before the end of the period, and put it away with two breakaway tallies in the third. Brycyn Nettell stopped 20 shots, and took the loss in net for the Gremlins.
• Hancock dropped a 2-0 decision to Traverse City Central.

In eight-player high school football championship games Saturday…

• Forest Park claimed the Division Two championship, with a convincing 42-20 victory over Morrice in the title game. The Trojans recovered two early Orioles fumbles, and built a 28-0 halftime lead. Sophomore Dax Huuki ran for 136 yards on 19 carries, and scored two touchdowns. Nik Stephens scored three touchdowns. Morrice found a bit of traction in the second half, with two rushing touchdowns and a punt return for a score, but never threatened. Forest Park adds a fifth state championship trophy to its showcase.
• In the Division One title match, Pickford also built a midgame lead, thanks to an epic performance by by Panthers quarterback Tommy Storey, who ran for 282 yards and four rushing touchdowns in the first half. Dekkerville rallied in the second half, however, with several long offensive drives keeping Storey on the sideline. The Eagles scored the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Pickford punted with 9:25 remaining, and Dekkerville began a drive at their own one-yard line. Eighteen plays and 74 yards later, the clock expired, and the Eagles claimed their second eight-player state crown.

The 11-player title will be decided this coming Friday and Saturday. No Upper Peninsula teams are involved.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team lost 3-1 to Minnesota State Saturday night. Jack Works’ goal early in the second period gave the Huskies an early lead, but the Mavericks tied the game five minutes later, and scored twice in quick succession in the third period to put the game away. Tech outshot MSU 33-18. Derek Mullahy took the loss in net.

The NMU hockey squad had the weekend off.

College Volleyball

At the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament in Big Rapids Saturday…

• Michigan Tech fell to top-seeded and nationally top-ranked Ferris State 3-2 (17-25, 25-20, 9-25, 25-22, 9-15).  Meg Raabe paced the Huskies with 12 kills, and Kate Loch added 11. Tess Hayes logged 35 assists and 20 digs. 
• Northern Michigan also bowed out, with a tight 3-2 (21-25, 26-24, 25-20, 16-25, 14-16) loss to second-seed Grand Valley State. Jacqueline Smith lad 20 kills for the Wildcats, and Meghan Meyer added 15.

The Lakers and Bulldogs will meet in the title match this afternoon.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team dropped a 72-61 decision at St. Cloud State Saturday. Isabella Lenz scored 19 points, and passed the 1,000 point mark for her career. The Huskies face sixth-ranked Minnesota Duluth today.

The NMU women’s team improved to 5-0 with a 65-63 win at Minnesota Duluth Saturday. The Wildcats face St. Cloud State today.

Marcus Tomashek netted a career-best 40 points, as the Tech men’s team upended third-ranked Minnesota State Moorhead 74-70 Saturday.

The Northern men’s team fell 79-67 to Minnesota Duluth Saturday. Julien Smith scored 27.

NHL

The Red Wings suffered a 2-1 loss to the Bruins Saturday night. Lucas Raymond netted Detroit’s only goal. Cam Talbot made 29 saves.

The Wings visit the Islanders Monday. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, Wings coverage will begin at 7:15 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons lost 111-100 to the Magic Saturday. Jaden Ivey led Detroit with 19 points, and Malik Beasley added 18. Cade Cunningham missed the game because of the hip injury he suffered Thursday. Team officials have still not been able to nail down when he’ll return.

The Pistons welcome the Raptors Monday.

NFL

The Lions visit the Colts in a 1:00 game tomorrow on 99.3 The Lift. Cornerback Terrion Arnold has been added to the list of players who will miss the game. Emmanuel Moseley will be available, after missing all of the season following a training camp injury.

The Packers entertain the 49ers in a 4:25 contest.

The Rams host the Eagles in the Sunday night game on 99.3 The Lift.
