In high school football last night…
– L’Anse edged Houghton 15-14.
– Calumet rolled over Negaunee 30-8.
– Ontonagon defeated North Dickinson 28-6.

In high school football tonight…

– Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Ishpeming, in what is believed to be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

In high school volleyball yesterday…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell v Hancock – not reported.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City v Chassell – not reported.
– L’Anse swept Westwood 3-0 (25-7, 25-18, 25-8).
– Baraga v Wakefield-Marenisco – not reported.

In volleyball today, Jeffers plays at Ontonagon.

At the Dale Phillips cross country invitational in Marquette yesterday…
– Ishpeming won the boys’ meet. Chassell finished fourth, and Houghton fifth. Joe Wood finished sixth individually for the Gremlins, and Abe Gockenbach led the Panthers with an eighth place finish.
– Marquette took the girls team title, with Chassell second, Houghton fourth, and Calumet ninth. Chassell’s Lela Rautiola finished sixth individually. Anabel Needham and Maria Velat of the Gremlins finished eighth and ninth.

MTU
The Michigan Tech football team opened its season with a 20-10 victory at Truman State University last night. James Henderson rushed for 105 yards. Will Ark completed 13 of of 25 passes for 151 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Ben Hartley caught the touchdown pass, and threw one of his own, connecting with Jacob Wenzlick on a 67-yard score. Ark took over at quarterback after starter Garrett Young was hurt on the opening drive.

The Tech soccer team scored both of its goals in the second half, and blanked Minnesota-Duluth 2-0 last night. Both scores came from freshmen – Grace Shaw and Gabby Sgambati. The Huskies will host St. Cloud State tomorrow afternoon at 1:00.

The MTU volleyball team begins play at the Northern Michigan University Invitational today. The Huskies will face Bemidji State this morning, and Minnesota-Duluth this afternoon. They’ll face St. Cloud State tomorrow morning, and Minnesota-Crookston tomorrow afternoon.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s and women’s soccer teams begin their seasons at Northland College this afternoon. The men’s team will face Viterbo at Ashland tomorrow.

The Lions volleyball team faces Marian University at the Ripon Quadrangular tonight, then meets the host team and Wheaton College tomorrow.

The Finlandia football team opens its season at home against Concordia-Wisconsin tomorrow. Our coverage from McAfee Field will begin at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift, 993The Lift.com, and the free Lift Apple and Android apps.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers scored three runs in the ninth inning, and edged the New York Yankees 8-7 last night. Victor Martinez’ second home run of the night tied the game, and Niko Goodrum’s homer three pitches later was the game winner. Jeimer Candelario and Ronny Rodriguez also homered. Alex Wilson earned the win with a scoreless eighth. Shane Greene got the save.

The Tigers play in New York again tonight. Jordan Zimmermann will start against Luis Severino. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

Shortstop Dawel Lugo doubled in his major league debut with the Tigers last night. He was called up after José Iglesias was placed on injured reserve with an abdominal strain. After last night’s game, reliever Josh Smoker was sent back to Toledo. A replacement will be called up today.

Lorenzo Cain’s home run in the top of the 11th inning gave the Milwaukee Brewers a 2-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds yesterday. Wade Miley and five Milwaukee relievers held the Reds to just six hits.

The Brewers face the Nationals in Washington tonight. Jhoulys Chacín will pitch against Tanner Roark.

NFL
The Detroit Lions wrapped up their exhibition schedule with a 35-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns last night. The Lions trailed 25-0 at halftime.

The Green Bay Packers did all their scoring in the first half, in a 33-21 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
