Football Wins for Calumet, Hancock – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

On the opening night of the high school football season…

  • Alex Jayne rushed for three touchdowns as Iron Mountain came from behind to defeat Houghton 26-16. The Gremlins scored on their opening possession on a five-yard Jay Halonen run. Jace DeForge fueled the drive with catches of 28 and 29 yards. DeForge added a second touchdown with a 75-yard reception late in the first half. The Gremlins took a 16-14 lead into the locker room, but were held out of the endzone in the second half. 
  • Calumet buried West Iron County 50-0. Ben Anderson ran for two touchdowns, caught a Ted Loukus pass for a 42-yard scoring play, returned an interception 40 yards for a score, and kicked six extra points. The Copper Kings scored on every possession except the final kneel-down.
  • Hancock shaded L’Anse 6-0.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell opened with a 36-20 loss to Hurley. Josh Daavettila ran for 163 yds and a touchdown. Brady Axford rushed for 122 and one touchdown, and also threw a touchdown pass to Isaac Johnson.

Ontonagon kicks off its season at home tonight against Carney-Nadeau.

In high school volleyball yesterday…

  • Baraga fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 3-1.

In volleyball today…

  • Houghton opens play at the Beast of the Northeast tournament in Appleton.

Several local cross country teams will compete at the Dale Phillips Invitational in Marquette today.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team began its season with a 19-13 overtime loss to 25th-ranked Bemidji State last night. Alex Fries gave the Huskies an early lead with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Champney. Avery Kucharski’s second field goal of the night at the end of regulation forced extra play. He misfired on an attempt on the opening overtime possession. The Beavers then scored a touchdown to end the contest.

The Northern Michigan football team suffered a 35-7 loss to 17th-ranked Minnesota Duluth. The Wildcats were held to just 112 yards of total offense, while the Bulldogs racked up 562 yards.

MLB

The Tigers couldn’t capitalize on eight hits, and lost 3-0 to the Angels yesterday. Keider Montero gave up all three L-A runs over five innings, and took the loss.

The Tigers welcome the Red Sox tonight. Casey Mize may be brought off the injured list to start against Tanner Houck. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Will Vest returned from paternity leave for last night’s game. Mason Englert was returned to Toledo. 

 Joey Wentz was hit by two batted balls during last night’s game. The first glanced off his pinkie. The second slammed into his right knee. He’ll be evaluated today.

The Brewers blanked the Giants 6-0 yesterday. Aaron Civale held San Francisco to two hits over seven innings. Garrett Mitchell homered.

The Brewers play two today in Cincinnati. The afternoon contest is a make-up for an April rainout. Colin Rea will start against Nick Martinez. In the evening game, DL Hall will pitch against Rhett Lowder.

Running

The Ed Hanson Memorial Run will be one of the highlights of this weekend’s Ontonagon County Labor Day Festival. The event includes 10k, 5k and two-mile races around the village. Registration will be on-site only, beginning at 9:00 at Anytime Fitness. The entry fee is $25. Proceeds will be divided between the Ontonagon Booster Club and the Ontonagon County Cancer Association.
