Football Playoffs Start Tonight – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

The regular high school volleyball season wrapped up last night…
• Houghton fell to Kingsford 3-1.
• L’Anse got past Ontonagon 3-2 (25-21, 25-27, 14-25, 25-22, 15-8).
• Chassell v Watersmeet – no report.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City edged Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-2 (26-28, 25-20, 25-13, 18-25, 15-13)

L’Anse was scheduled to play at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City to make up for a postponement from October 14th. Because of activities associated with the Purple Hornets’ football playoff game in Traverse City tonight, the volleyball contest has been canceled, and will be recorded as a forfeit victory for the Blue Bolts. 

The football playoffs begin tonight.

In Division Six…
• Houghton opens at Negaunee. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Calumet plays at Menominee. Coverage will start at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

In Division Seven…
• L’Anse plays at Traverse City Saint Francis at 6:00.

In Eight Player Division Two…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell opens at Forest Park. Streamed coverage from our sister station WIKB in Iron River will be available on the front page at KBear102.com.

The Great Lakes Eight Conference West Division football all-conference team was released yesterday. North Central was named Team of the Year, and the Jets’ Luke Gorzinski was honored as both Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year.

Local players from Lake Linden-Hubbell on the first team include offensive lineman Gabe Popko, defensive lineman Kirby Koskela, and James Milkey, who was selected at running back and defensive back. First team honorees from the Ontonagon-Ewen-Trout Creek co-op include receiver Bryce Buzzo and offensive lineman Mason Totzke.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team hosts top-ranked Grand Valley State tomorrow at 1:00 at Kearly Stadium.

Northern Michigan entertains Ferris State tomorrow.

Finlandia University hosts Westminster College tomorrow. Coverage begins at 12:40 on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team entertains St. Lawrence tonight at 7:07, and tomorrow at 6:07.

Northern Michigan hosts Alaska tonight and tomorrow.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team opens its regular season at Saint Catherine’s tonight and tomorrow.

The Finlandia men’s team begins its season with home games against Bethel University tonight at 7:15 and tomorrow at 5:30 at the Houghton County Arena.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team plays at Wayne State tonight, and Saginaw Valley State tomorrow.

College Soccer

Michigan Tech will conclude its regular season against Northern Michigan at home today at 5:00.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers open their season with a home-and-home series against the Mutineers this weekend. Tonight’s game is in Marquette. Tomorrow’s faces off at 730 at Dee Stadium.

NHL

The Red Wings suffered a lopsided 5-1 loss to the Bruins last night. Adam Erne scored Detroit’s only goal, and Ville Husso took the loss in net.

The Wings host the Wild tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons and Hawks play in Detroit tonight. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The World Series begins tonight, when the Phillies visit the Astros.

There’s been a leadership change with the Brewers. David Stearns has stepped down as president of baseball operations. He will be replaced by his former assistant, Matt Arnold. Stearns has a year left on his contract, and is expected to fill that out as an advisor.

The Brewers have also re-signed pitcher J.C. Mejia to a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to major-league spring training camp.

NFL

In last night’s NFL contest, the Ravens defeated the Buccaneers 27-22. 

Sunday…
• The Lions entertain the Dolphins in a 1:00 game on 99.3 The Lift.
• The Packers visit the Bills in the Sunday night contest.
