Flames Finish Legion Tourney as Runners-Up – Sunday Sports Wrap

American Legion Baseball

The Copper Country Flames American Legion baseball team finished as runners-up at the state tournament yesterday afternoon, falling to the Marquette Blues 10-0 in the championship game. As they had in a similar 10-0 win over the Flames on Friday, the Blues dominated from the mound, with Dakota Maki tossing a no-hitter. Marquette scored one run in the first inning, then broke the game open with six in the third. Dean Jermu and Dylan Horning pitched for the Flames. The game was limited to five innings, because of the mercy rule.

The Flames had advanced to the title match from the loser’s bracket of the double elimination tournament with a 7-3 victory over Rosebush yesterday morning. Eli Oldt pitched a complete-game victory, allowing four hits. Brandon Norkol had three hits, including a double. Kade Ferrell scored three runs.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers fell to the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 last night. Matt Manning pitched into the sixth, giving up all five Baltimore runs. Eric Hasse hit his 18th home run of the season.

The Tigers host the Orioles again this afternoon. Tyler Alexander will start against Spenser Watkins. Coverage will begin at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Dansby Swanson hit a grand slam and drove in seven runs, as the Atlanta Braves bashed the Milwaukee Brewers 8-1 last night. Brandon Woodruff took the loss, giving up three runs before leaving in the sixth. Daniel Norris closed out the sixth inning in his first appearance in a Milwaukee uniform. The slam came off fellow newcomer John Curtiss in the seventh. Lorenzo Cain had three of the Crew’s seven hits.

The Brewers visit the Atlanta Braves again this afternoon. Brett Anderson will pitch against Charlie Morton.

Milwaukee continues to be dogged by COVID-19 problems. Pitchers Jake Cousins and Hunter Strickland tested positive on Saturday and have been placed in quarantine. Team officials say both had been vaccinated. Jandel Gustave sat out last night’s game because of contact tracing.

NBA

With the NBA free agency signing period set to open tomorrow, the Detroit Pistons made moves to protect three players. Detroit extended qualifying offers to Hamidou Diallo, Frank Jackson and Saben Lee. That makes them restricted free agents. They also waived Cory Joseph, Deividas Sirvydis and Tyler Cook to clear additional salary cap space.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Tyler Bertuzzi to a two year contract, said to be worth $9.5 million. Bertuzzi is returning from back surgery that forced him to miss most of last season, and says he’ll be ready for training camp next month.

Watercross

The second annual Jeff Moyle Memorial Watercross event concludes today at the Lake Linden Campground. Racing begins at 10:00. For more details and ticket information, click here.
