The Detroit Tigers’ late comeback fell short, as they lost to the Minnesota Twins 6-5 on Saturday. The Twins scored five runs off Jordan Zimmermann before forcing him from the game in the fourth inning. They added the eventual game-winner in the seventh off Warwick Saupold. Detroit closed the gap by scoring five runs in the eighth inning. Justin Upton’s three-run homer was the big blow.
The Tigers conclude that series at Minnesota today. Matthew Boyd will start against Adalberto Mejía. Pregame coverage begins at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Milwaukee Brewers snapped their six-game losing streak with a 9-8 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies Saturday. Milwaukee built an early lead, powered by Ryan Braun’s home run and four RBIs, and a homer by Travis Shaw. Philly scored four times in the seventh and three times in the eighth to tie the game. Domingo Santana singled home the winning run in the top of the ninth.
The Brewers wrap up that set in Philadelphia this afternoon. Junior Guerra will pitch against Jerad Eickhoff.
Milwaukee sent outfielder Keon Broxton down to Colorado Springs yesterday, to make room for Eric Sogard, who was brought off the disabled list. Broxton was mired in a 3-for-50 slump.
Little League
The Portage Lake Majors dropped a 10-2 decision to Bay City Northwest Saturday morning at the state Little League baseball tournament in Gladstone. Portage Lake opened the tourney Friday with a 4-0 victory over White Lake. They will face Birmingham today at 3:00, as pool play concludes. The quarterfinals are scheduled to be played tomorrow.
American Legion Baseball
The Copper Country Flames lost to Gladstone 16-8 in the American Legion Zone Five championship game Saturday at the Hancock Driving Park. The Flames jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but couldn’t hold off the Indians. Hans Stimac homered for the Flames, who advance to the state tournament next weekend in Gladwin despite the loss. They will play Menominee this afternoon to determine if they will be the second or third-seeded team from our area.
