Flames Advance to Zone Semifinals – Saturday Sports Wrap

American Legion Baseball

The Copper Country Flames Legion Post 186 baseball team won both of its games yesterday, and advanced to the Zone 5 semifinals.

In their afternoon contest, Kade Farrell threw a one hit shutout against Gladstone, as Copper Country cruised to a 5-0 victory.

In the nightcap, the Flames fell behind Iron Mountain 5-3, but tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. A double play turned by catcher Dylan Horning the top of the seventh helped the Flames get out of a bases loaded jam. Farrell then scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as a run down led to an errant throw. The final was 6-5.

Copper Country finished pool play with a 3-0 record, and faces Escanaba this morning at 11 in the Zone 5 semifinal at Gladstone.

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team has added a new recruit. Blake Portalski is a catcher and first baseman from Tacoma, Washington.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team has hired a new assistant coach. David Juarez spent last season as an assistant with the women’s program at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. He previously worked with Tech head coach Turk Ozturk at Eagan High School in Minnesota, where he also served as head coach for the Salvo Soccer Club.

MLB

The Tigers had yesterday off, and host the Twins this evening. Michael Pineda will start against Joe Ryan. Coverage begins at 5:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Luis Urías singled home Jonathan Davis with the winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning, as the Brewers shaded the Rockies 6-5 last night. Corbin Burnes tossed five innings, giving up a two-run homer in the top of the third. Milwaukee surged ahead in the bottom of the third with homers by Willy Adames and Andrew McCutcheon. Colorado tied the game with a run off Trevor Gott in the sixth, then surged ahead with two off Jandel Gustave in the top of the 10th. A two-out, two-run shot by Hunter Renfroe in the bottom of the 10th kept the game going. Milwaukee used eight pitchers, with Brent Suter throwing the last two innings to earn the win.

The Brewers host the Rockies again this evening. Brandon Woodruff will start against José Ureña.

Milwaukee has brought centerfielder Tyrone Taylor back from the concussion list. He fills the roster spot that opened up when Jason Alexander was optioned to Nashville before the All-Star break.
