FinnU Women’s Hoops Falls – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School
Calumet has been named the Class C Football Team of the Year by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. The Copper Kings turned in an unbeaten regular season, before falling to Traverse City Saint Francis in the district championship game. Three Kings were named to the Dream Team defense – tackle Alex Studebaker, linebacker Trevor Hendrickson, and defensive back Brent Loukus. Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Carter Crouch was named the Dream Team return specialist.

The Large School All Star squad includes center Drew Bjorn, running back Travis Ojala, end Matt Ojala and return specialist Nick Djerf from Calumet, along with Houghton linebacker Ty Halonen.

The Small School All Star team includes guard Ben Wilson and defensive back Carter Crouch from Lake Linden-Hubbell.

Ontonagon tackle Phil Voss was named to the Eight Player Dream Team Offense, and Gladiators defensive end Ed Polokowski was placed on the first team. See the full list of UBSSA eight-player honorees here.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team lost to the University of Dubuque 90-54 last night at the Paavo Nurmi Center. Katie Lundeen led the Lions with 12 points, and Hancock’s Molly Berg added 11.

Travis Wiltzius has officially been named the head coach of the Finlandia football team. The former Escanaba standout was named interim coach after Rob Boss was fired last April. Boss recently pleaded “no contest” to charges of aggravated assault and domestic violence, stemming from an incident that occurred when he was on the staff at Northern Michigan University.

MTU
Michigan Tech players Jake Lucchini and Seamus Donohue have been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week. Lucchini had five points, and Donohue tallied three assists in the Huskies’ sweep at Ferris State University.

Baillie McGirk of the Huskies has been honored as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Player of the Week. McGirk scored a career-best 29 points in Tech’s win over Ursuline College Friday night.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University men’s and women’s basketball teams will entertain Minnesota-Duluth tonight.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Arizona Coyotes tonight. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons visit the Toronto Raptors tomorrow night. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the New York Giants scored a touchdown with two minutes remaining, and edged the San Francisco 49ers 27-23. If you played The Wolf Pro Football Challenge, you must have selected at least 11 games correctly to qualify to be our weekly winner.
