Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team cruised to to easy victories at Maranatha Baptist University yesterday, 19-1 and 28-3. Both games ended after five innings because of the mercy rule. In the first game, Mary Pratt walked five times and drove in three runs, Denia Bent and Maegan Kraft scored four runs each and Kassandra Avila drove in four runs. Avila gave up one hit, one run and struck out nine. 12 Lions batters were hit by pitches. In the nightcap, Finlandia set a school record by scoring 13 runs in the second inning. Bent had two hits, scored a school record six runs, and drove in five runs. Pratt had four more walks and scored five runs.
MLB
The Cleveland Indians hit two solo home runs last night, and edged the Detroit Tigers 2-1. The first shot came off starter Matthew Boyd, who gave up just three hits over seven strong innings, and left with the game tied. Alex Wilson took the loss. Detroit’s only run came when Victor Reyes scored on a Jeimer Candelario double in the seventh inning.
The Tigers will continue that series in Cleveland tonight. Jordan Zimmermann will start against Carlos Carrasco. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Matt Carpenter’s two-run homer off J.J. Hoover in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted the Saint Louis Cardinals to a 5-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers last night. The game was tied at one entering the ninth inning. Each team scored a run in the ninth, and another in the 10th. Milwaukee failed to score in the top of the 11th, opening the door for Carpenter’s game-winning shot.
The Brewers face the Cardinals in Saint Louis again this afternoon. Junior Guerra has been called up from Colorado Springs to pitch against Adam Wainwright.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons will close their season tonight against the Bulls in Chicago.
NHL
The NHL playoffs open tonight. The Flyers visit the Penguins… the Wild visit the Jets… and the Kings skate at Las Vegas.
The Detroit Red Wings’ rebuild will continue under coach Jeff Blashill. General manager Ken Holland said yesterday that he’s seen enough progress from the team’s young players to keep Blashill in place for at least another season. There may be some changes among the assistant coaches.
Hero Hustle
The first organized run of the season will take place on Saturday. The Hero Hustle is sponsored by the CMU Physical Therapy Student Organization at Michigan Tech. It will include both a 5k walk and a timed 5k run, and will start in Lot 14, between the Rozsa Center and Fisher Hall on campus. Registration will open at 9:00, and both events will begin at 10:00. Participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite superheros. Proceeds will be donated to the Michigan Chapter of the National MS Society.
