FinnU Softball Falls Twice – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• The Houghton game at Kingsford was postponed until today.

College Softball

The Finlandia University softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader at Saint Scholastica yesterday, 11-0 and 6-5. The Lions managed just three hits in the opener, and committed five errors. They rebounded in the nightcap, with Jaden Matthews’ bases-loaded triple giving them a 5-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning. The Saints scored two in the bottom of the fifth, tied it in the bottom of the sixth, and won it with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.

The softball team will play two at Maranatha Baptist tonight. The Lions will host Northland College for a doubleheader Sunday. Coverage will begin at 1:40 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

The Finlandia baseball team plays doubleheaders at Wisconsin-Eau Claire today and tomorrow.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team wraps up its season at home against Wisconsin-Parkside tonight at 7:00, and Purdue Northwest Sunday at noon.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team has added a new recruit. Justin Raymond was an all-star at Gladwin High School.

College Football

The Finlandia football team has also introduced a new player. Coby Riendeau is a linebacker from Crosby, Texas.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings claimed their third straight victory last night, 4-1 over the Chicago Blackhawks. Troy Stecher scored twice for Detroit. Jakub Vrana found the net in his first game as a Wing, and Michael Rasmussen added a late tally.

The Wings entertain the Blackhawks again tomorrow night.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the Oklahoma City Thunder tonight. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Tarik Skubal struggled again, as the Detroit Tigers fell to the Oakland Athletics 8-4 last night. Skubal gave up just two runs over four innings, but left after throwing 88 pitches. Buck Farmer gave up a run in the fifth, and the A’s took command with four runs in the sixth off Joe Jiménez and Alex Lange. Niko Goodrum homered for Detroit.

The Tigers continue that series in Oakland tonight. José Ureña will pitch against Frankie Montas. We’ll join the game in progress after Pistons basketball on 99.3 The Lift.

Jiménez had been called up from the taxi squad earlier yesterday, after Detroit placed right fielder Nomar Mazara on the 10-day injured list. Mazara suffered a left abdominal strain in Wednesday night’s game.

85 percent of the Tigers players and traveling staff have now cleared their vaccination windows. That means the team qualifies for relaxed COVID-19 protocols, including not wearing masks during games and outdoor workouts.

The Milwaukee Brewers had yesterday off, and begin a home set against the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight. Adrian Houser will start against J.T. Brubaker.

Chicago Cubs manager David Ross and pitcher Ryan Tepera have been suspended for intentionally throwing a pitch at Milwaukee starter Brandon Woodruff during Tuesday’s game. Chicago catcher Willson Contreras admitted that the pitch thrown behind Woodruff’s head was payback for a Woodruff pitch that hit Contreras earlier in the game. Ross will miss one game, and Tepera three.
