Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team’s season ended yesterday morning, with a 3-2 loss to Alfred State University in the American Collegiate Athletic Association tournament. The Lions scored twice in the top of the third inning, on RBI singles from Makenna Gorham and Kassandra Avila. Alfred State tied the game with two in the fourth. The Lions loaded the bases in the sixth inning, but couldn’t score. Jamie Parente’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning ended the game, and the Lions’ attempt to repeat as tournament champions. Avila, Gorham and Kyndell Coffman were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Lions defeated Alfred State 7-4 in their tournament opener Saturday. They then suffered their first loss of the double-elimination competition, 9-0, to eventual champion Thomas More. Finlandia finished the season with a record of 11-24.
The Lions baseball team ended its season with a pair of losses at Wisconsin-LaCrosse Saturday, 6-3 and 20-2. Joey Krug homered in the final game, establishing a new single-season record with five, and a new career record with 12. Finlandia ends its season with a record of 4-31.
MLB
Brandon Dixon’s three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning powered the Detroit Tigers to a dramatic 5-2 win over the Kansas City Royals yesterday. Dixon’s diving catch of a potential double down the left field line in the top of the 10th helped extend the game. Spencer Turnbull turned in seven strong innings, giving up a run on six hits.
The Tigers have today off, and host the Los Angeles Angels tomorrow night. Daniel Norris will start against Griffin Canning. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Before yesterday’s game, the Tigers called pitcher Eduardo Jiménez up from Toledo. He takes the place of Drew VerHagen, who was designated for assignment.
The Milwaukee Brewers scored three runs in the third inning, and held off the New York Mets 3-2 yesterday. Christian Yelich returned to the starting lineup after missing some time with back problems, and blasted a long home run to the third deck in right field. Zach Davies pitched into the eighth inning, gave up two runs, and earned the win.
The Brewers host the Washington Nationals tonight. Jhoulys Chacín will pitch against Max Scherzer.
Milwaukee center fielder Lorenzo Cain left yesterday’s game after he was hit on the hand by a pitch. An x-ray showed no damage, and he’s considered day-to-day.
After Saturday’s 18-inning game, Milwaukee called up reliever Burch Smith from San Antonio yesterday to provide some bullpen depth. Taylor Williams, who pitched the final four innings of the Saturday marathon, was sent down. Jay Jackson was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

In the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs yesterday, the Saint Louis Blues defeated the Dallas Stars 4-1. That series is tied 3-3.

– The Boston Bruins visit the Columbus Blue Jackets. Boston leads that series 3-2.
– The Colorado Avalanche entertain the San Jose Sharks. San Jose leads that set 3-2.
Multiple reports say former Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland has accepted an offer to become GM of the Edmonton Oilers. Neither team has confirmed the move. Holland was promoted to team vice-president, and was given a contract extension, when State Yzerman was hired recently as Detroit’s general manager. Holland has spent 36 years with the Red Wings, 22 as GM.
NBA
In NBA playoff action yesterday…
– The Toronto Raptors got past the Philadelphia 76ers 101-96. That series is tied 2-2.
– The Denver Nuggets edged the Portland Trail Blazers 116-112. That set is tied 2-2.
Tonight…
– The Milwaukee Bucks visit the Boston Celtics. Milwaukee is up 2-1 in that series.
– The Houston Rockets entertain the Golden State Warriors. Golden State leads that set 2-1.
