FinnU Men’s Hoops Team Earns First NCAA Win Since 2017 – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school boys basketball last night…
• Houghton shut down West Iron County 66-24.
• Jeffers overwhelmed Calumet 67-24. The Jets had four players in double figures, led by Isaiah Frahm with 15 points. Johnny Schutz added 13, Levi Frahm 11, and Matthew Schutz had 10. No Calumet player scored more than four.
• L’Anse outscored Hancock 57-40.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City stuffed Baraga 78-31.

In girls action last night…
• Houghton pulled away from Iron Mountain 67-50. The Mountaineers hung tough through the first half, but the Gremlins outscored them 21-5 in the third quarter to put the game away. Iron Mountain narrowed the gap a bit against the Houghton reserves in the final quarter. Four Gremlins reached double figures, paced by Paige Sleeman with 18 points. Meghan Trewhella chipped in 15, Annika Peterson 13, and Stella Wickstrom 11. Ashlee Runsat led the Mountaineers with 12 points.
• Calumet dismantled L’Anse 71-21. Marybeth Halonen scored 20 for the Copper Kings. Alexis Strom added 19, and Jana Loukus had 14. Makaiah Minerick scored seven for the Purple Hornets.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City outscored Bessemer 51-42.
• Baraga thumped Watersmeet 60-18.

On the girls’ schedule tonight (may be changed because schools are closed)…
• Houghton entertains Chassell.

In high school hockey last evening…
• Jeffers fell to Marquette 8-0, in a game that ended after two periods because of the mercy rule.

In high school swimming yesterday, Houghton v Westwood – no report.

In the Houghton Invitational high school skiing tournament yesterday, the Gremlins women’s team won by a half-point. The men finished second to Marquette.

College Basketball

Both Finlandia University basketball teams defeated Northland College yesterday…
• The men’s team pulled out an 88-86 victory. B.J. Williams and River Shumate hit some clutch free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win. Rae’quan Funches led the Lions with 24 points, and Trace Jones had 22 points and 12 rebounds. It was the first win for the Lions men’s team over an NCAA opponent since December, 2017.
• The women’s team stopped the Lumberjills 78-55. Bailey Froberg scored 25 for the Lions.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings buried the San Jose Sharks 6-2 last night. Pius Suter and Tyler Bertuzzi each scored twice. Dylan Larkin and Robby Fabbri also found the net. Alex Nedeljkovic made 24 saves.

The Wings head west to face the Anaheim Ducks tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Charlotte Hornets this evening. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

A member of the Detroit Tigers’ 1968 championship team has died. Tom Matchick was a utility infielder for Detroit from 1967 through 1969. He later played for the Red Sox, Royals, Brewers and Orioles. Tom Matchick was 78.
