FinnU Men’s Hockey Falls at Trine – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school girls basketball last night…
• L’Anse got past Ironwood 46-42.

In boys’ action…
• Calumet lost to Negaunee 42-26. The Miners defense held the Copper Kings to just seven points in the first half. Kip Kangas led with Calumet with 11 points, and Dryden Nelson added nine.
• The Hancock-Ishpeming game was postponed – no make-up date has been announced.
• The Jeffers-Ontonagon game was postponed to tonight.
• The Baraga-Bessemer contest was moved to tonight because of COVID-19 issues.
• L’Anse fell to Ironwood 36-34.

In basketball tonight…
• Both Dollar Bay-Tamarack City teams will host Watersmeet. The girls contest will tip off at 5:45, with the boys to follow. UPDATE – BECAUSE WATERSMEET HAS GONE TO ONLINE LEARNING FOR A WEEK, THESE GAMES HAVE BEEN POSTPONED. NO MAKE-UP DATE HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED.
• Both Baraga teams play at Bessemer. There will be no boys JV contest.

In boys action tonight…
• Houghton plays at Hancock, in a game that was rescheduled from December 16th. Coverage will begin around 7:00 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Ontonagon will play at Jeffers.

On the girls schedule tonight…
• Houghton visits Lake Linden-Hubbell.
• Chassell journeys to Wakefield-Marenisco.
• The scheduled Jeffers game against Ontonagon has been postponed to January 31st because of injuries and illness affecting the Gladiators.

In high school hockey tonight…
• Houghton visits Negaunee. Because of Gremlins basketball on 97.7 The Wolf, hockey coverage will begin at 5:40 on KBear 102.3.
• Hancock entertains Kingsford.

The Houghton Alpine ski team competes at the Marquette Invitational today.

The Houghton swim team entertains Ishpeming.

College Hockey

The Finlandia men’s hockey team was able to get their delayed series at Trine University started last night, and suffered a tight 6-4 loss. Tyler Perkins scored twice for the Lions, and Max Messier and Phil Schader each found the net once. Marcus Gloss made 53 saves to keep Finlandia in the game. Those teams will skate again tonight in Angola.

The Michigan Tech hockey team is ranked 19th in this week’s DCU/USCHO.com Top 20 poll. Minnesota State is first, followed by Quinnipiac, Western Michigan, and the University of Michigan.

College Basketball

Both Finlandia basketball games that were scheduled against Wisconsin-Superior this evening have been postponed. No make-up date has been announced.

Michigan Tech’s Ellie Mackay has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Player of the Week. Mackay scored a career-high 36 points in the Huskies’ recent win over Wisconsin Parkside.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings will visit the San Jose Sharks tonight. Coverage will begin at 10:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings could be without both Dylan Larkin and Tyler Bertuzzi this evening. Larkin is still being evaluated for an upper body injury he suffered during Sunday’s game. Bertuzzi received a cut on his wrist from a skate blade in the final minute of overtime in that contest.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons stunned the Utah Jazz with a come-from-behind 126-116 victory last night. Detroit overcame a 22-point deficit to win their second straight game, and their first over the Jazz in nearly six years. Cade Cunningham had his best game of the season, with 29 points. Saddiq Bey also scored 29. With head coach Dwayne Casey in COVID-19 protocol, lead assistant Rex Kalamian managed the team.

The Pistons visit the Chicago Bulls tonight.

NFL

With the Detroit Lions’ season over, at least one of the team’s assistant coaches is attracting interest from other clubs. There are reports that the Denver Broncos have asked for permission to talk with defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn about their vacant head coaching position.

Meanwhile, the Lions are beginning the search for a new offensive coordinator. As was widely expected, Anthony Lynn was fired yesterday after a season in which head coach Dan Campbell eventually took over the offensive play calling.

College Football

The University of Georgia claimed its first Division I national college football title in 41 years by defeating the University of Alabama 33-18 last evening.
