High School

In boys high school basketball last evening…

  • Houghton lost at Escanaba 57-36. Brad Sirard scored 18 for the Gremlins.
  • Hancock fell to Iron Mountain 82-36.
  • Calumet outscored Gwinn 66-49. Matt Ojala scored 26 for the Copper Kings.
  • Jeffers earned a 64-58 homecoming victory over Lake Linden-Hubbell. Christian Hocking led the Jets with 24 points. William Lyons had 19 for the Lakes.
  • L’Anse edged West Iron County 54-50.
  • Baraga fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 63-52.
  • Dollar Bay-Tamarack City shut down Republic-Michigamme 68-37.

In girls high school basketball last night…

  • L’Anse outscored Hancock 55-32. Josie Rice paced the Purple Hornets with 17 points. D’Andra Kero had 12 for the Bulldogs.

Today, the Houghton girls entertain Ontonagon, in a game that was postponed from February 7th. The JV game will begin at noon, followed by the varsity contest at 1:30.

In high school hockey today…

  • Houghton hosts Kingsford in a make-up game. Faceoff is at 1:00. Our pregame coverage will begin around 12:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
  • Calumet skates at Escanaba.

The Houghton swim team will compete at the U.P. finals at Marquette today.

The Copper Country Ski Tigers will take part in the Michigan High School Cross Country Ski Championships in Ishpeming this weekend. The Ski Tigers are six-time defending state champions.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University men’s hockey team lost the first game of their opening-round Harris Cup series 2-1 to top-seeded Saint Norbert College last night. Kendall Bolen-Porter scored the Lions only goal. Marcus Gloss made 27 saves. That series will be decided tonight at Saint Norbert. If Finlandia wins the regular game this evening, a 20-minute mini game will follow to decide the series. Broadcast coverage will begin at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team wrapped up its season with a 5-1 loss at Aurora University yesterday. The Lions conclude their campaign a record of 1-24-0.

Both Finlandia basketball teams have the weekend off.

MTU/NMU

The Michigan Tech hockey team lost 3-1 at 19th-ranked Lake Superior State last night. Brian Halonen gave the Huskies an early advantage, but the Lakers tied it in the second period, took the lead early in the third period, and added an empty-netter to seal the win. Matt Jurusik made 26 saves. Those teams skate again tonight in Sault Sainte Marie.

The Northern Michigan University hockey squad skated to a 2-2 tie at Bemidji State University last night. The Beavers claimed the extra standings point in the second overtime. Those teams play in Minnesota again tonight.

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams will play at Ferris State University today.

Both Northern Michigan University hoops squads will play at Lake Superior State this afternoon.

GLHL

Ed Beiring and Logan Rastello each had hat tricks, as the Calumet Wolverines defeated the West Bend Bombers 8-6 at the Colosseum last night. The Wolverines visit the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tonight.

The result of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against the Eagle River Falcons last night was not reported. The Pioneers will host the West Bend Bombers tonight at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Philadelphia Flyers this afternoon. Pregame coverage will start at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

The Detroit Lions have released veteran safety Glover Quinn. Quinn started every game during his six years as a Lion, and made the Pro Bowl in 2014. His production faded last season.

Baltic Ice Rink

The Baltic Ice Rink has been closed until further notice because of unsafe snow weight on the roof.
