FinnU Football Wins Third Straight – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball yesterday, Calumet claimed the title at the Houghton Invitational. The Copper Kings didn’t lose a game on their way to the finals, defeating L’Anse 25-10, 25-9… Gwinn 25-19, 25-12… Ironwood 25-7, 25-18… Dollar Bay 25-11, 25-10… and West Iron County 25-10, 25-18 in the semifinal. The host Gremlins took the first game of the championship match 28-26, but Calumet won the second game 25-23, and took the tiebreaker 15-5.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team completed a sweep at the Grace Bible College quadrangular in suburban Grand Rapids yesterday. After defeating Mount Mary and Grace Bible on Friday, the Lions blanked Faith Baptist Bible College 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-16) to close out the event. Kaisa Holmstrom had 13 kills and 10 digs. Mikayla Mickam also had 13 kills. Nicole Anderson recorded 38 assists and three aces.

The Finlandia football team won its third straight game, defeating Trinity Bible College 27-21 yesterday. The Lions trailed 14-6 at halftime, but quarterback De’Llontae Johnson fired touchdown passes to Taylor Bonetti, Dillion Hueckstaedt and Tyler Kangas to give Finlandia the lead. Trinity made it close with a late score, but Johnson recovered the ensuing onside kick, and the Lions ran out the clock for the win. .

The Finlandia women’s soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision at Mount Mary University yesterday. Kelsi McDermid scored the Lions’ only goal off a pass from Jennifer Hernandez in the 58th minute. Hannah Tormanen kept Finlandia in the game with eight saves.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team fell 5-0 at Concordia-Wisconsin yesterday.

Both Lions teams play at Lakeland College this afternoon.

MTU
The MTU hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie at Lake Superior State last night, then earned the extra WCHA standings point in a shootout. Goals by Joel L’Esperance and Alex Gillies sent the Huskies into the third period with a 2-1 lead. The Lakers tied the game midway through the third period. Jake Lucchini found the net in the shootout. Patrick Munson made 23 saves.

The Tech football team lost at 16th-ranked Ashland 48-0 yesterday afternoon. Quarterback Jake Brown completed just seven of 16 passes for 47 yards, and threw four interceptions.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team suffered a tough 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 21-25, 17-25) loss to Findlay in its final game at the Midwest Regional Crossover Tournament in Aurora, Illinois, yesterday. Mariah Sherman led the Tech offense with 13 kills. Anna Jonyas paced the defense with 16 digs.

The MTU soccer team will play at Tiffin today at noon.

NMU
Darien Craighead’s goal in the final second of regulation play lifted the Northern Michigan University hockey team to a 1-0 victory at Ferris State last night.

The NMU football team couldn’t hold an early lead, and lost 35-24 at Tiffin yesterday.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings entertain the Tampa Bay Lightning tomorrow night. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will start at 7:10 on KBear 102.3.

MLB
The Houston Astros opened up a two games to non lead in the American League Championship Series with a 2-1 win over the York Yankees yesterday. Game three will be played tomorrow in New York.

The Los Angeles Dodgers drew first blood in the National League Championship Series, with a 5-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs last night. That set continues tonight in Los Angeles.

NFL
The Detroit Lions visit the New Orleans Saints in a 1:00 NFL game this afternoon. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift. The Green Bay Packers play at Minnesota in a 1:00 game.
