The MTU volleyball team split its matches on the final day of the Wildcat Invitational in Marquette yesterday. The Huskies opened the day with a 3-2 (17-25, 25-14, 25-18, 18-25, 8-15) loss to St. Cloud State. Tech then swept Minnesota-Crookston 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-11) in the closing match. Olivia Ghormley led the Huskies with 15 kills against St. Cloud, and 16 against Crookston.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s soccer team fell to Viterbo University 1-0 yesterday. Noah Raisanen made nine saves.

The Lions volleyball team was swept in its final games at the Ripon Quadrangular yesterday. Finlandia fell to the host Ripon College squad 3-0 (17-25, 13-25, 15-25), then lost to Wheaton College 3-0 (11-25, 15-25, 9-25). Nicole Anderson of the Lions was named to the all-quadrangular team.

Concordia-Wisconsin scored on its first three possessions of the game, and cruised to a 31-3 victory over the Finlandia football team yesterday. The Falcons outgained the Lions 454 yards to 182. FinnU’s only score came on a 33-yard Avery Huibregtse field goal.

MLB
The New York Yankees edged the Detroit Tigers 2-1 yesterday. Daniel Norris threw four no-hit innings in his return from a long stay on the disabled list, but gave up a two-run homer in the fifth. He left the game with a cramp in his leg. Detroit outhit New York 9-2, but the Tigers’ only score came on a Victor Martinez sacrifice fly in the first inning.

The Tigers wrap up that series in New York today. Matthew Boyd will start against Lance Lynn. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

On the day major league rosters could expand, Detroit added only one player – pitcher Sandy Baez from Double-A Erie. The Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens are fighting for first place in the International League West Division, and team management will leave other potential call-ups in place to assist in the playoffs.

The Washington Nationals scored four runs in the eighth inning, and came from behind to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 last night. The outburst against Joakim Soria, Dan Jennings and Jordan Lyles came after a nearly two-hour rain delay. Tyler Saladino and Manny Piña homered for Milwaukee. The Brewers face the Nationals in Washington again this afternoon. Junior Guerra will pitch against Jefry Rodriguez.

The Brewers expanded their roster for the final month of the season by adding pitchers Corey Knebel and Brandon Woodruff, catcher Jacob Nottingham, infielder Tyler Saladino and outfielders Keon Broxton and Domingo Santana from the Minor Leagues. Zach Davies is set to return from the disabled list to start against the Cubs tomorrow.
