Finlandia
Concordia-Wisconsin returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, and never looked back as they defeated the Finlandia University football team 42-6 yesterday. Finlandia lost two fumbles and threw three interceptions. The Lions’ only touchdown came on quarterback De’Llontae Johnson’s 20-yard run on the fourth quarter.

The Finlandia University volleyball team dropped two close matches as it concluded play at a tournament in Lake Forest, Illinois, yesterday. The Lions fell 3-1 to the Milwaukee School of Engineering, and then dropped a 3-1 decision to Lake Forest.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team lost 6-0 to Marian University yesterday. The game was scoreless through the first 68 minutes. With only one substitute available, compared to 10 for Marian, Finlandia faded down the stretch. Haley Makela made 29 saves.

The Finlandia women’s cross country team finished 12th out of 13 teams at the Tom Barry Invitational yesterday. Ashley Aho was the Lions’ top finisher, in 83rd place.

The Finlandia men’s golf team placed 20th out of 20 teams at the Edwood Fall Classic in Janesville, Wisconsin, yesterday.

MLB
The Cleveland Indians scored four runs in the first inning, and cruised to a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers last evening. Jordan Zimmermann struggled through five innings, and gave up all five Cleveland runs. Myles Jaye tossed three-and-a-third scoreless innings in relief in his major league debut for Detroit.

The Tigers host the Indians again this afternoon. Chad Bell will make his first major league start for Detroit, filling in for the injured Michael Fulmer. Josh Tomlin will counter for the Indians. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit will finish the season without designated hitter Victor Martinez. Doctors have identified the section of his heart that is causing his irregular heartbeat. They will perform a cardiac ablation to disable that tissue. He should be ready for next season, which is the final one in his contract.

The Washington Nationals scored twice in the eighth inning, and came from behind to edge the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 yesterday. The loss spoiled a fine effort by Milwaukee starter Brandon Woodruff, who gave up just one run on two hits over seven innings. He struck out eight. Josh Hader allowed both eighth-inning runs, and took the loss.

The Brewers host the Nationals again this afternoon. Brent Suter will pitch against Edwin Jackson.

The Cubs won again, so Milwaukee falls four-and-a-half games back in the National League Central Division race.

Our high school football coverage continues Friday night, as Hancock entertains Northland Pines. The pregame show will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Our coverage of Finlandia University athletics begins Saturday, when the Lions’ football team hosts Lawrence University. Pregame coverage will start around 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
