The Calumet JV hockey team had to cancel its returnable can and bottle drive last Saturday, so they’ll try again this Saturday. Team members and supporters will travel through the streets of Calumet and Laurium between 10:00 and 2:00. They will pick up donations you set out on your porch, or at the curb. If you live outside town, call 934-2052 to arrange a pickup. Money raised will support the team.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team lost 73-57 at Trinity International University in Illinois last night. The game was tight through the first half, but the Trojans pulled away midway through the second half. Lela Horne led the Lions with 16 points and nine rebounds. Julia Daavettila had 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Molly Berg also scored 14 points. The Lions play at Olivet College tonight.
MTU
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams host Ashland University tonight. The women’s game tips off at 5:30. The lady Huskies are ranked 13th in the nation, and the unbeaten Eagles are ranked first. The men’s contest starts at 7:30.
NMU
Both Northern Michigan University hoops teams entertain Tiffin tonight.
NHL
Andreas Athanasiou’s goal six seconds into overtime lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators last night. The six-second extra period is tied for the quickest in NHL history. Athanasiou also scored Detroit’s other goal. Jimmy Howard stopped 33 shots in net. The Wings have won three straight, and entertain the Florida Panthers tomorrow night. Coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Miami Heat sank 17 three-pointers, and outscored the Detroit Pistons 111-104 last night. Detroit played without Andre Drummond, who suffered bruised ribs during practice on Tuesday. He’s not expected to miss much time. Avery Bradley did return to the lineup, after missing seven games with a groin injury. Tobias Harris led Detroit with 19 points, and Boban Marjanović collected nine rebounds. The Pistons play at Philadelphia tomorrow night.
NFL
The Green Bay Packers made it official yesterday, announcing that defensive coordinator Dom Capers will not return to the coaching staff next season. Assistant linebackers coach Scott McCurley and defensive line coach Mike Trgovac were also released, after the team struggled defensively this season. There are also reports that offensive coordinator Edgar Bennett has been removed, although he could remain with the team in another position.
Green Bay linebackers and associate head coach Winston Moss will be talking with the Detroit Lions about their open head coach position today. The Lions will also interview Minnesota offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, who played his college ball at Michigan State.
