The Finlandia University women’s basketball team earned its first victory of the season last night, shutting down Mount Mary University 66-39. The Lions jumped ahead early, and led by 22 points at halftime. Four Finlandia players scored in double figures, led by Brooke Turin with 16 points. Mikayla Hakela added 15, and Julia Daavettila contributed 14 points, and grabbed 13 rebounds.

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams host Ferris State tonight. The women’s game starts at 5:30, and the men’s game tips off at 7:30.

Both Northern Michigan University hoops teams entertain Grand Valley State this evening.

The Detroit Red Wings opened the “second half” of their season with a 3-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Gustav Nyquist scored Detroit’s only goal. Petr Mrazek stopped 20 shots, and took the loss. The Wings visit the Florida Panthers tonight. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons got off to a slow start, and fell to the Boston Celtics 102-95 last night. The Celtics led by 20 at halftime, and then held off a furious Detroit fourth-quarter comeback. Reggie Jackson led the Pistons with 17 points. Andre Drummond added 16 points and 13 rebounds. The Pistons entertain the New York Knicks tonight.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope left last night’s game with a groin strain, after he appeared to slip on a wet spot on the court in the second quarter. Coach Stan Van Gundy said he will likely miss tonight’s game, and will undergo an MRI today.

Barneløpet Sunday
The annual Barneløpet will be held Sunday afternoon at the Maasto Hiihto Trails. The Barneløpet features Nordic ski races for kids ages three through 17. Registration begins at 1:00 in the chalet. Events will begin at 2:00, and awards and snacks will be handed out after the activities are complete. For more details, click here.
