MLB – Tigers Outlast Royals
Ian Kinsler drove in three runs, as the Detroit Tigers held off the Kansas City Royals 6-5 last night. Kinsler’s two-run homer in the seventh inning gave Detroit a 6-2 lead. KC came back with two in the bottom of the seventh off Justin Verlander. They added another in the eighth off Blaine Hardy, but Neftali Feliz came in to strand runners at first and third. Verlander got the win, and Bruce Rondon pitched the ninth to earn the save. Full details are here.

Jimmy Nelson out-pitched Pittsburgh ace Gerrit Cole, as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Pirates 7-4 last night. The Brewers staked Nelson to an early lead with four runs in the first inning, and another in the second. Nelson gave up just one run over seven innings to get the win. Full details are here.
The Brewers host the Pirates again tonight. Zach Davies will make his major league debut for Milwaukee. Jeff Locke will start for Pittsburgh.

Finlandia Soccer Splits; V’Ball Falls
The Finlandia University men’s soccer team gave up an early goal, then came from behind to earn a 2-1 victory over North Central University in its season-opener yesterday. Jonathan Barnes and Robert Hernandez scored for the Lions. Full details are here.
The women’s soccer team struggled early, and lost to North Central 9-1 yesterday. The Rams scored seven of their goals in the first half. Serena Jaime scored the Lions’ only goal. Details are here.

Excitement is building in advance of Finlandia University’s first-ever football game this Saturday against Alma College. Some VIP tickets are still available. The Finlandia University Blue Line Club will host its annual golf outing at the Calumet Golf Club Sunday. The event is a three-person scramble, with a shotgun start at 11:00. Lions, Packers Cuts Continue
The latest round of cuts for the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers didn’t include any surprises. Both teams trimmed their rosters to the required 75 players yesterday. Green Bay’s moves included officially placing wide receiver Jordy Nelson on injured reserve for the season.
