The Finlandia University women’s soccer teams fell 5-0 to Northland College yesterday. The men’s team defeated Northland 3-0. Alex Freeman had two goals and an assist, and Thomas Whiting had seven saves in goal.

Conor Gillaspie’s three-run homer in the ninth inning gave the San Francisco Giants a 3-0 victory over the New York Mets in the National League Wild Card game last night. Madison Bumgarner pitched a complete-game shutout for the Giants, who will face the Cubs in the Divisional Series.

Both American League Divisional Series begin today. The Blue Jays play at Texas this afternoon, and the Red Sox play at Cleveland tonight.

Brad Ausmus will return for a fourth season as manager of the Detroit Tigers. General Manager Al Avila confirmed yesterday that the club has picked up the option on the final year of Ausmus’ contract. Avila credited Ausmus with developing some of the young players who contributed this season, as the team suffered a number of injuries.

The Detroit Red Wings outskated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2 in a preseason game last night. Gustav Nyquist had a goal and two assists. Jared Coreau stopped 30 shots in net. He hasn’t played or practiced since the start of the season because of a quad issue, and the team has not said how serious this new injury is, or how it occurred. Tight end Eric Ebron is expected to miss Sunday’s game against the Eagles, along with defensive end Ezekiel Ansah.
