In high school hockey Saturday…
– Hancock lost to Hartland 4-1. Tanner Givens’ goal in the first period put the Bulldogs up early, but the Eagles scored three times in the third period to put the game away.
– Jeffers fell to Big Rapids 7-2 at the Soo Elks Showcase.
In high school football…
– North Central powered its way to a second-straight eight-man high school football title Friday night, with a 58-22 victory over Deckerville.
– In Division Eight, St Ignace was shut out 35-0 by Muskegon Catholic Central in a snowy game at Petoskey.
– In Division Five, Menominee edged Frankenmuth 23-20 in a semifinal game at the Superior Dome. The Maroons will face Grand Rapids West Catholic in the finals Saturday at 4:30 at Ford Field.
MTU
Michigan Tech’s four-game hockey winning streak ended Saturday, with a 1-1 tie at Alaska-Anchorage. After two scoreless overtimes, the Seawolves earned the extra WCHA standings point in a shootout. Gavin Gould scored the Huskies’ only goal. Angus Redmond stopped 20 shots in net. Tech skated to a 3-2 victory at Alaska-Anchorage Friday night.
The MTU women’s basketball team improved to 3-0 with a 76-62 win over Concordia-St. Paul Saturday. The Huskies broke open a close game by outscoring the Golden Bears 25-11 in the third quarter. Morgan Anderson led MTU with 23 points and seven assists. On Friday, Tech got off to a fast start, and buried Minnesota-Crookston 74-53.
The Tech men’s basketball team fell to Minnesota State-Moorhead 90-82 on Saturday. Freshman Tommy Lucca dazzled again for the Huskies, scoring 27 points. MTU lost to Southwest Minnesota State 73-69 Friday night, and has now dropped three straight games.
NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey squad was swept at Bemidji State, losing 5-2 on Saturday after falling 2-1 Friday night.
The NMU women’s basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Minnesota-Crookston 63-60 on Saturday. The Wildcats lost to Concordia-St. Paul 68-61 Friday night.
Northern’s men’s basketball team fell to Southwest Minnesota State 87-69 on Saturday, after dropping a lopsided 104-68 decision to Minnesota State Moorhead Friday night.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team was swept at Lawrence University over the weekend, losing 5-0 on Saturday, and 4-0 on Friday.
The Lions’ women’s hockey team plays at Adrian today. Finlandia dropped an 8-1 decision to Concordia-Wisconsin Friday night.
Senior Brandon Robinson had a career-high 36 points as the Finlandia University men’s basketball team came from behind to stun 14th-ranked Alma 89-85 Saturday afternoon. The Lions trailed by 21 points early in the second half, but came back on the strength of some hot shooting and aggressive rebounding. It’s the first win by the Finlandia men over a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association team in six years. The men’s team opened its season with a 90-49 loss at Calvin College in Grand Rapids Friday night.
Julia Daavettila led the Finlandia women’s hoops team to an 83-78 victory over Carroll College in the consolation game of the Hope College tip-off tournament in Holland Saturday. The former Dollar Bay High School star had 24 points, 12 rebounds and four assists, and sank a crucial three-pointer that gave the Lions the lead with 39 seconds remaining. Finlandia began its season by falling 93-47 to Hope College on Friday.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons suffered their first home loss of the season Saturday night, a 94-92 heartbreaker to the Boston Celtics. After missing nine games with a concussion, Al Horford grabbed an offensive rebound and scored the winning basket in the closing seconds. Marcus Morris led Detroit with 24 points, and Andre Drummond snared 17 rebounds. The Pistons host the Houston Rockets tomorrow night.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings entertain the Calgary Flames tonight.
NFL
The Detroit Lions welcome the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 1:00 game today. Defensive end Ezekiel Ansah and running back Theo Riddick saw limited practice this week because of injuries, but could play. Linebacker Dendre Levy has also been working out with the team as he recovers from a knee injury, but is still listed as doubtful. Check the full injury report here.
